Life & Work with Jessica Colby of Irmo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Colby.

Hi Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career in New Jersey. However, I’ve been around the industry my whole life! So I knew at a young age that I wanted to be a hairstylist. I went through extensive training throughout my career and had certifications with some of the biggest names in the industry so I could perfect my craft. 13 years into my career, we made a move to South Carolina, where I opened up the strand and shade hair studio; it was very scary since I knew no one in the state; I took a leap of faith, and 2 years later it has been great, and I’m proud to say it has been a great success!

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
It’s been pretty smooth. The only challenge I had was building a clientele again from nothing, I had a vast clientele in New Jersey, and when I moved here, I knew no one, so starting from scratch was a little challenging.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
I provide hair care services to women; my specialties are hair extensions and balayage services. Hair is very important to women, and I have the opportunity to make them feel their best inside and out daily. That is my favorite part about what I do. During my career, I’ve had many women cry tears of joy when I turned the chair around, and they would see their hair and look transformed. It’s an honor to be able to do that. What sets me apart from others is that I listen to my client’s wants and needs, am very transparent with them, and make sure their overall experience while in my chair is exceptional. Of course, I provide a fun and relaxing environment for them. My clients always express that they love coming to me because they can be themselves and feel comfortable with me. It’s not just providing great hair; it’s providing an experience as well.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and are any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learned from the covid-19 crisis that Beauty services are essential to women. Being locked down caused a lot of depression and anxiety. For women to not be able to go out and get their hair, nails, and skincare done was tough because it’s not only about looking and feeling good beauty services but also providing good therapy.
