Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen Scully.
Hi Jen, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My artistic journey intertwines a deep-seated passion for the coastal essence with a diverse professional background. Although I initially pursued art classes in college and later received a graduate degree in art therapy, my formal education did not lead to a degree in fine art. For 20+ years, I dedicated myself to the non-profit sector, eventually ascending to the executive director position. However, the dream of being a professional artist persisted amidst this fulfilling yet demanding career. Around nine years ago, working full-time as an art therapist, I mustered the courage to explore my artistic calling. Despite the initial fear of putting myself out there, the positive reception to my paintings propelled me forward. Balancing the role of a full-time art therapist and nurturing my burgeoning artistic endeavor became a challenging yet personally significant side hustle. The decision to pursue art professionally was driven by a profound need for creative expression and the desire to make my mark as an artist. The coast isn’t just a subject for me; it’s the rhythmic heartbeat of my artistic process. From the rocky shores of Maine to the vibrant landscapes of Charleston, South Carolina, I try to capture the soul of the coast in my creations. I love bringing that feeling (the sights, sounds, touch of the beach) into my clients’ homes through my art. My artistic vision extends beyond traditional canvases, transforming creations into a dynamic lifestyle brand, inviting others to join me on this coastal journey where every stroke tells a story, and every piece brings a touch of the coast into daily life.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Transitioning from a secure full-time role to the unpredictable realm of art as a profession presented its own set of challenges. Juggling the demands of my non-profit leadership position while simultaneously striving for growth in my artistic venture required careful navigation. The balancing act of managing a full-time role and fostering artistic growth posed difficulties, but the intrinsic importance of this creative outlet fueled my determination. Another obstacle lay in the inherent uncertainty of a side hustle evolving into a thriving business. The challenges of establishing and expanding my art as a brand while engaged in another demanding career were considerable. However, my dedication to my passion and belief in the transformative power of coastal-inspired art propelled me forward, pushing the boundaries of my self-taught abilities.
Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us a bit more about your work.
My art is where the East Coast and West Coast meet on canvas (and beyond). My art is a celebration of the senses associated with the coast. My artistic evolution over the past nine years has resulted in a fusion of soothing neutral compositions and lively bursts of color, reflecting the diverse moods of the coastal environment. My bold, raw, and laid-back demeanor mirrors the untamed beauty found along shorelines, creating fearless and unfiltered expressions on canvas. Last summer’s move to the Lowcountry marked a pivotal moment, deepening my connection to the coast and inspiring new artistic horizons. Beyond traditional canvases, I have extended my artistic vision into apparel and accessories, transforming my creations into a dynamic lifestyle brand. Art is a continuous celebration of life’s vibrant hues, an invitation to infuse every space with the serene joy of beachside moments. Each stroke telling a story is a testament to the playful spirit within us all.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
A surprising aspect of my artistic journey is the evolution of my creations into a lifestyle brand. Beyond traditional canvases, my artistic vision embraces a holistic approach, translating my coastal-inspired art into hand-painted jackets, totes, shirts, hats, and more. This unexpected turn has transformed my art into a dynamic celebration of life’s vibrant hues, inviting the essence of the coast into various facets of daily life. Moreover, the recent relocation from Connecticut to South Carolina significantly shifted my personal and artistic life. This move has allowed me to deepen my connection to the coast and share the unique beauty of the Lowcountry through my continually evolving art. My artistic journey’s unexpected turns and expansions have become integral to celebrating life’s vibrant hues and the playful spirit within us all.
