Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Misrahi.
Hi Jason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started Stitch Street as a labor of love. I lived in new york city and had a successful career. After work, I would go to a Rock and Roll t-shirt shop near my office called “teds formal wear” Its world-famous, with no Twitter very little Instagram, and no website, it was a destination,
When covid hit NYC, it wasn’t the same as it was in Greenville, people were dropping like flies. During the lockdown, I realized I wasn’t happy with my career so I went to Charlie the owner of teds formal wear, and asked if he loved what he did and, without blinking an eye said yes.
He said he would mentor me and help me start my business, happiness in work is priceless, that’s how Stitch Street started.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It’s been a fun road but it has not been smooth. My intention was to open a brick-and-mortar store but we moved to Greenville in the middle of covid so I decided to start Stitch Street as an e-commerce site. I am not the most computer savvy so everything took longer than I thought it would.
When the website was built, I knew nothing about SEO or Instagram so I had to go backward to move forward and as a 1-2 person business everything was a learning curve.
I have cerebral palsy so I started with pop-ups to get my name out there. Doing this means hiring people to help me set up, so I had to lose money to be seen and heard to make money.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’ve worn many hats in my day but music is my true passion and love.
I sell limited edition Rock and Roll and hip hop t-shirts. What makes Stitch Street different than most rock and roll t-shirts is that every t-shirt is hand-picked and is very hard to get in the states. I source my shirts from England and the United States,
The goal is to be different and to find rare shirts at an affordable price to spread my love of music. The main goal of Stitch Street is to build community through music so it’s not just about t-shirts, it’s about a sense of belonging for people who love music and building community.
The long-term goal is to build a sense of community and be a major part of the Greenville community and create a sense of belonging. So even though I sell Rock and roll t-shirts I am looking to build a sense of safety for music lovers and eventually start creative workshops in Greenville.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I have Cerebral Palsy, which is why inclusivity is very important to the Stitch Street Community. My mantra is to create possibilities for all. Growing up with cerebral palsy inclusivity is very important to me. All I want is to create a safe place where everybody feels like they belong.
I grew up in a household where I wasn’t treated any differently, I grew up in a 3 story house and my parent’s intention was to figure out how to make it work for me which is one of the greatest gifts they ever gave me. I started using a walker until I was about 12 then with hard work, I learned how to use crutches and now walk with a cane.
I never let my disability define me, my heart and love define me.
