Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Barnard.
Hi Doug, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started photography about 6-7 years ago as a hobby and it really connected with my love of nature and exploring. I had a bit of natural ability for it, so people would often say “you have a real eye for imagery”. Which was ironic, bc as a kid I was shot in the eye with a BB, so I really only have one good eye!
After a year or so my skills (and equipment) improved enough to begin working as a professional photographer. And after a few more years of learning and practicing my craft, I finally had some of my photos published (Charleston Magazine and Charleston Living) and also won the Charleston Magazine Reader’s Choice award for my photo “Palmetto Holiday”.
I have also been doing a lot of pet therapy work over the last 10 years or so with my dogs Lowell and Annie. We love our weekly visits with patients and staff at the Medical University of South Carolina. You can see more of that experience on Instagram and Facebook @TherapyDogAnnie
When COVID broke out and our pet therapy was put on hold, we started working with schools to help with reading and writing assignments. We would have zoom meetings with the classes to tell them about pet therapy. The kids then wrote their own fictional stories about pet therapy which I compiled into the book “Get Well Soon: Pet Therapy Stories from a Children’s Writing Program”
(available on Lulu.com and Amazon with all money from the sales being donated to the MUSC Pet Therapy Program)
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finding the time to do all the things we want to do while still maintaining close connections with our family and friends.
What’s next?
Keep taking pics and keep helping people that could use a little help.
