Life & Work with Brayson Aldrich of Darlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brayson Aldrich.

Hi Brayson, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey with photography started uncommonly. I love basketball; it’s the only sport I’ve ever liked. I was trying out for the junior varsity basketball team and knew beforehand I probably wouldn’t make the team, so I began pondering other ways I could stay around the game I adored so much. That’s when sports photography popped into my mind. I knew my high school didn’t have a true team photographer, so I decided to fill that role after tryouts. The first game I ever photographed was a preseason scrimmage, and the reception I got was amazing. Everyone inspired me to continue taking photos throughout the season and learn more about my camera and how to utilize it to its full potential. Later in the basketball season, I got a job with my local newspaper covering sports, writing articles, and taking pictures. This allowed me to grow my brand and get my name out there. I also got a media pass which helps a ton with getting into games. Aside from sports, though, I also photograph events. I’ve been able to take photos at a pageant, birthday parties, and soon prom. My parents have helped me a ton when it comes to event bookings. I’ve been booked for 3 birthday parties so far, 2 of which my dad helped me with by telling people what I do. My parents have been a huge help in my journey, and they’ve been supportive every step of the way. Overall, I started photography in November, and the progress and support I’ve gained in such little time excite me for what the future holds for me.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
For the most part, yes. The only issue I’ve had is repetition, just doing the same thing repeatedly. Not every basketball game or soccer game will have high energy, and sometimes I would face back-to-back boring games, which took my overall enjoyment out of shooting games in some cases. Other than that, I compare myself to others. Since I only started photography a few months ago, I need the expensive cameras and lenses others may have. I would compare my work to someone who has been an established photographer for years and doubting what I could do. I’ve since learned that if I keep my head down and continue to work hard, I’ll eventually make it to where others are.

Thanks for sharing that. Can you tell us more about your work next?
My work is photography, I specialize in sports and am probably most known for my sports photography, but I can take portraits and other events. One of my favorite events I’ve done so far is the 2023 Miss Mayo Pageant. Going from bright gyms with high-speed action and loud crowds to a dark stage with slow-paced action and a quiet audience was very different, but I loved how my photos came out. My dedication to what I do is what standouts; I’m passionate about photography and want to continue learning and growing my skills in whatever way possible.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very nerdy. I was never really into sports and always insisted on staying inside and playing video games. I always had a thing for technology, though I would always be on Youtube learning how to be a Youtuber and the different software and technology needed to become one. That contributed to why I enjoy photography so much; the technology side of it excites me, but also being able to capture moments and keep them is amazing as well.
