Life & Work with Amy Mulder

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Mulder.

Hi Amy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Yes! Thank you so much for having me! I am Amy, owner of Amy Mulder Photography, wife to Ross, mother to the most perfect son, and crazy cat lady through and through. As a child, I knew I wanted to be an anthropologist, an architect, or a photographer. I have been fortunate enough to be able to do a little of all three. I designed our own custom dream home, and anthropology has merged so well with photography. Photography never feels like a job, I love what I am able to do!

When I was a teenager, my father built me a darkroom in our basement and I would spend hours developing film and making prints. I would lose days in there, it was where I felt most alive. For university, I was encouraged to find a profession I could do for a living, something that was not art, but still, keep doing my art on the side. I picked Social Work. After graduating and working in the social work field for eight years, I met my husband. At the time, I was working in a hospital in end-of-life care.

He saw my burnout and one night over dinner we decided I would go back and try what I always loved… photography. Over a decade later, I have built a thriving business, shooting at locations all over the world, leading workshops, and doing education to train up other photographers.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Oh my word, definitely not obstacle free! All kinds of business – and life – lessons have been learned. We started a podcast to talk through a lot of these things in order to help others out too. We talk on our podcast about overcoming so many challenges and obstacles throughout this business journey. From five years of infertility, loss of children, tornado destroying our home, death of family members, and cross country moves, just to name a few.

What I always come back to is I go through things for a reason, and that is to help others. I am honored to go through challenging times because that means I will be able to help out others walk through their difficult journey amidst growing their business and family.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Thank you so much! I’m honored! Absolutely. My business is known for its luxury wedding photography and education. I love, and am so honored, to also do fashion photography, branding shoots, and luxury photography workshops. My work is best known for creating emotion and telling a unique story through each photo. The best compliment I receive from people is that they FEEL things when looking at my work.

Our reputation is known for our transparency, authenticity, and our genuine love and care for people. I am definitely proud of our reputation among clients and colleagues alike. Fairness and honestly are my top priorities in how I run my business.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think the risk is beyond necessary as a business owner… and with life in general! I believe in dreaming big, and pursuing my passions, and creating things of substance and purpose. My husband always says ‘you never go small.’ If I have an idea, I make sure it comes to fruition. Sometimes that has ended up being extremely challenging, but always rewarding.

Not even necessarily financially rewarding, but rewarding because of growth as a human and in my business. I ALWAYS learn so much every single time I step out and try. It has been such a fun journey and I’m excited to see what all comes next.
