Life & Work with Adam Babington of Columbia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Babington.

Hi Adam, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started college at USC in 2018 wanting to be a music education major. However, in December 2019, I decided to switch majors after being told I’d probably be in my undergrad until I was 24 if I didn’t. So I switched to the Media Arts major, not knowing exactly what I wanted to do other than I liked taking pictures. In 2021 I wanted to start taking pictures other than just portraits. I love cars, so I emailed every racetrack or person having a car-based event in South Carolina and hoped for the best. One of the people that replied was the owner of Lucky Dog Racing League, who were having their first east coast event and said they’d pay me to shoot their event; now I’m in my third year of being their east coast photographer. Back to school, I graduated in December of 2021 (3.5 years after I started and way earlier than if I continued in music education) and still needed to figure out what I wanted to do other than enjoy filming things, and I loved screenwriting. I got a job as a creative services producer at WACH Fox 57 in May of 2022, where I got to do the things I loved in college and was only 2 blocks away from the building I had all my classes in. I also started making my rugs from scratch and am still writing the movie I created for my screenwriting class.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Finding work has been the most challenging part, both freelance and getting my full-time job.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m known for doing many things, and they’re all creative.
– photography (people and racecars)
– video work (TV commercials and other things)
– writing a movie
– making my rugs
– Graphic design

And the things that I want to do or get better at
– write music
– build furniture
– work on cars
– digital and physical art
– make clothes

What does success mean to you?
I define it by if I like the end product or not, at least for what I do.
