Today we’d like to introduce you to Will & Emily Rowe.
Hi Will & Emily, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hampton Park Healing Collective began with a real South Carolina love story. While working as a public school teacher, Will met Emily, a membership director in the wellness space. The two bonded over their shared passion for music, education, wellness, and social justice. Will completed a trauma-informed, social justice-inspired yoga teacher training in 2023, and Emily received certification in Sound Therapy. Combining these modalities together with their lifelong passion for music, they created their signature class. Movement & Sound, a split class of beginner-friendly yoga set to a historically themed musical playlist, followed by 20 mins of a sound bath with 432Hz crystal sound bowls and a variety of instruments. The opportunity for Will to pursue a PhD in the History of Medicine presented itself, and the pair packed their Prius and hit the road with their two cats for an adventure to their new home, Saskatoon, SK. Since the move, Emily has been traveling back to Charleston monthly to host public and private events, as she travels between the states and Canada for her work as a music agent. Their work is rooted in radical wellness, bridging social justice into their wellness events to create more diverse spaces for community connection.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The obstacles to starting many businesses are attendance and, in the beginning, getting the word out. As we grew, we faced space constraints and became too crowded. Attendance than ebbed and flowed, as we navigated Class Pass finding our groove with weekly classes and events in our studio space. Once we moved to Canada, we left behind weekly classes and our own studio space to partner with other businesses and practitioners to form an aligned community and collective.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Our organization specializes in building transformational somatic experiences within culturally conscious containers, addressing both interpersonal and structural problems. We are different from others because not only are we both wellness practitioners, but Will is also a PhD candidate whose research combines historical perspectives on music, race, and wellness. We partner with the Gullah Geechee Angel Network to breathe life into this research and create spaces for social connection. We believe wellness should exist outside of formal studio spaces, and by bridging Will’s background in higher education with Emily’s in community organizing, we formed our collective.
What’s next?
The future of Hampton Park Healing Collective involves bridging communities and cultures through our continued efforts to expand our knowledge and community. We are planning a series of educational events that will bring the ideas we’ve been cultivating in Canada down to Charleston, bridging the most innovative research into Health & Social Justice into our local community.
