Today we’d like to introduce you to Shi-Mei Everette.
Hi Shi-Mei; it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I started my business while working as a dispatcher at one of our local police departments. I had been back in South Carolina for about five years and worked at several places. I began working on my business plan, and a friend reached out and said she needed help with her business. We talked about it briefly. A few months went by, and I reached out to her to discuss the exact needs of her business. We met two or three times after that, signed a contract, and began working. About 10 months later, someone else she knew needed the same help. I met with her, discussed some details, and signed a contract. Two weeks later, someone else came along. A month later, a mistake I made on a call cost me my dispatcher position. I was out of a full-time position and completely on my own. But, I had just met with an executive in property management who needed an assistant. Client number 4 secured. Within the next year, I had gone from four clients to seven. I owe all of this to my faith in God and stepping out of my comfort of having a 9 to 5.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur takes grit. There have been highs and lows. In building your company and brand, you want to stand out and be what everyone wants. But this means making sure the clients you attract are also a good fit for you. I found this out diving into a new contract with a client who did not check all the boxes of what I needed my client to be, and it created more work before the actual work. My ideal client knows their business inside and out. I am only there to assist in areas that they need to delegate and give suggestions to working processes that need fine-tuning.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Digital Display Virtual Assistants LLC?
Digital Display VA is an admin company specializing in Behavioral Health (BH) and Executive Admin. I offer to bill my behavioral health clients and straight admin work for my business professionals (entrepreneurs). There are large companies out there that do what I do, but my clients like that I can troubleshoot on their behalf and speak with their clients. I am happy that I decided to become an entrepreneur and build my brand. I am still looking for more BH clients to expand that side of my business and be able to hire a staff.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is when to say “No.” This goes back to ensuring you and the potential client are a good fit for each other. This saves you time and money. I’ve turned a client down because I knew they were not ready. I gave the number to someone who could help them get started, and they thanked me a few months later.
