Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Baus.
Hi Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up in STEM, and since the beginning of high school had my sights set on working in medicine. I knew I would go to college for science and I even completed a four-year medical program while in high school. While I was in college for Chemistry, however, I discovered my love of business and creativity. Worried to change course, I added on a communications minor and finished my degree. During my senior year, I started applying to many, many marketing jobs but had no luck. I decided to apply for a chemistry job, thinking maybe I would love the path I had originally chosen.
I started working as a Research and Development chemist at a pharmaceutical company after graduation and quickly became a shell of myself. I had been scared to pursue a creative/soft skills career, but it was very clear that I did not belong in a lab. After six months I had my first panic attack, the final sign after many others that pushed me to leave.
I quit with no job, no money, and no plan. I was fortunate enough to have parents who allowed me to come back home while I figured everything out. As I spent time discovering myself and my interests, I started working for TJ Maxx for money and would read marketing books on my lunch breaks.
While I worked at TJ Maxx I got connected with a digital entrepreneur who was willing to mentor me and pay me to help her develop her next business. Luckily, she was developing a freelance coaching business to teach other freelancers how to be successful. So, as I worked with her and developed new skills I was also learning how to build my own business.
When the pandemic hit and TJ Maxx shut down for several weeks, I picked up more hours with her since I had more availability. By the time TJ Maxx called to bring us back, I was making more than I was at the store. I quit and started freelancing, using my new skills to pick up more clients.
I did freelance marketing building websites, creating courses, writing email campaigns, and doing whatever else anyone needed from March 2020-November 2021. In November I decided to solely focus on social media for my clients and for myself.
I began managing Instagram accounts, consulting on TikTok success, and managing influencer campaigns for my clients.
In March 2022 after implementing some new strategies for my own TikTok account, I had a video go viral, accumulating over 20 million views and 250k followers in a month.
Today I am consistently making videos on TikTok and growing my influencing business while continuing to do social media management for my clients.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not, but I think there is never a smooth road. The hardest part is developing the skill to adapt and be comfortable with the unknown. In school, we have a very clear and predictable path to follow. After I graduated, I realized how heavily I relied on knowing what was going to come next and what I needed to do to get there.
We never know what is going to come next, and we never know what the correct move is. There is no curriculum or handbook. The only constant is yourself.
The biggest struggle was having to constantly battle self-doubt. It’s not just one moment, but each day when you were on an emotional rollercoaster of feeling on top of the world and then feeling sure that you will fail.
I had to learn how to trust myself and know that even if I didn’t always get it right (which I wouldn’t) I would still figure it out.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a full-service social media marketer from creation, ideation, copywriting, scheduling, and data analysis. My job is to get your brand seen and adored by as many people as possible. I specialize in Instagram and TikTok, creating content, measuring analytics, and developing strategies to help my clients grow their accounts and generate sales.
My strategies stem from the crossroads of the scientific method and creativity, marrying the hard and soft skills to develop actionable steps to reach my clients’ goals. I have an extensive analytics tracking method that allows me to identify the explicit actions that yield results rather than shooting in the social media abyss.
Additionally, I partner with brands to create content to post on their channels or to share with mine in order to increase sales and brand awareness.
Social media is the hub for data-driven creativity, and it is that understanding that creates success for my social media clients.
What are your plans for the future?
I plan to grow the User Generated Content sector of my business, partnering with more brands to create video content for their social channels!
