Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique Lowery.
Hi Monique, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I learned how to braid hair when I was about 10 years old. I started braiding my family members and friends’ hair for fun. I always knew that braiding was a passion of mine. In 2019 I had a full-time job, and I was just unhappy. I was struggling to make ends meet even though I had a job. So, February 2019 I started braiding hair after work to make more money. My clientele grew quickly, and I was reminded of the love I have for braiding. I always wanted a career in the hair braiding/beauty industry, but I was always afraid to pursue my passion. In January 2020 I took the leap of faith, and I left my job to braid hair full time. Here I am 2 years later still in business and doing what I love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I will not sugarcoat this, no it was not a smooth road. Absolutely not. There have been mistakes made and lessons learned. I had to learn how to effectively manage money in business. I had to learn how to manage being everything from behind-the-scenes business task to customer service and service provider. I learned that burnout is real and rest is important. With the help of GOD, I am still going strong. So, it was not a smooth road, but it was worth it.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Styled by Mo’ LLC. I provide protective braid styles for women to make their everyday life a little easier. I specialize in knotless braids. Aside from knotless braids, I also offer stitch braids. I protect your hair and your edges! My grandma always said I have growing hands. I am proud that I have consistent clients whose hair is growing beautifully. My goal is to protect and grow your hair, all while educating you on hair care.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would say that I am a risk-taker. I took a major risk in January 2020 when I left my job to braid hair full time. That was the beginning of the pandemic as well. It was a scary experience, but also empowering. It was scary because at my job I had definite income if I went to work, but with braiding hair income is not definite if you do not have clients. I did not know if it were going to work or if I would fail. That is the thing about risk you never know how it will come out, but your hopeful outcome is worth the risk. So, you take it (the risk)!
