Inspiring Conversations with Juliet Casper of Roy & Casper, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliet Casper.

Juliet Casper

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?

I was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky.  I received my Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana in 1989; my Juris Doctorate from Indiana University School of Law in 1992; and my Masters in Library Science from Indiana University in 1993. I worked as a legal research instructor and law librarian at Northwestern University in Chicago and Indiana University in Bloomington. I moved to the Carolinas in 2000, where her parents had retired. I had just gotten divorced and had a one-and-a-half-year-old son.  I knew no one on Grand Strand.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Having worked for seven years as a law librarian and instructor, I had to put my law degree into practice to find work in the Carolinas. I applied for paralegal positions with local firms since I was not yet licensed to practice in either North or South Carolina. Newby Pridgen & Sartip hired me as a paralegal in February of 2000. I didn’t know it then, but they had been looking for a female associate. Within a few weeks, the firm told me that they wanted me to take the South Carolina bar exam and become an attorney with the firm. Studying for a bar exam eight years removed from law school, raising a toddler with her parents’ help, and trying to make friends and connections in a new town were all challenges. What helped build my practice was joining the GFWC North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club, being an active member of BNI, and graduating from the Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Grand Strand program.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Roy & Casper, LLC was formed in February 2018, bringing together two of the Grand Strand’s established and respected real estate attorneys. In addition to commercial and residential real estate, the firm’s focus areas include estate planning and probate, business formation, leases, and corporate transactions. Customer service sets our firm apart from others and we are dedicated to volunteer service. I have been a North Myrtle Beach Woman’s Club member since 2002. I served as Club President (2007-2010). I then served as GFWC-SC Eastern District President (2010-2012), GFWC-SC Secretary (2012-2014), GFWC-SC Second Vice President (2014-2016), GFWC-SC First Vice President (2016-2018), and GFWC-SC President (2018-2020). I was elected 2011 to the Order of the Jessamine for GFWC-SC, an honorary society. I served on the GFWC Board of Directors as a Legislation/Public Policy Committee member (2020-2022) and now serve as that committee’s chairman and on the Resolutions Committee.

We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking.

Giving up a tenure track position at Indiana University and moving to the Carolinas to build a law practice was a huge risk but necessary to support my son and his future. Leaving the firm where I started and was a partner for 13 years was another big risk. Would my clients come with me? Would I be able to pay employees, rent, and insurance on my own?

Taking risks to pursue your goals is necessary.  Believing in yourself minimizes the risk of failing.
