Today we’d like to introduce you to Johnna Dominguez.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I started this journey after I graduated high school in 2021. I was initially going into the Army Reserves, but COVID happened, and I didn’t feel it was for me anymore. I always had a love & passion for makeup, so I decided to look into that. I found the Esthetics program at HGTC, researched more about what they do & signed up. I thought, “If I don’t like anything else in Esthetics, I’ll be a licensed makeup artist.” I ended up loving everything! I developed a love for skincare, waxing, brows, & a deeper love for makeup. This has become my passion & a life-long career.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road here was pretty smooth, with some bumps along the way. My biggest challenge was believing in myself & trusting my intuition. Doing this at 19 y/o was scary because I never knew anyone my age doing what I do. I was also the first in my family to start a business like this. I went from school to going solo. It was rough for the first 6 months. I had no clients, social following, no big names, or know anyone in the industry for referrals. I had to build everything from ground zero. Most people work for an established salon/spa with clientele, good word of mouth, etc. I didn’t want to work for someone else. I wanted a place that was mine.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a solo esthetician specializing in skin care, facials, waxing, brows & lashes, & makeup. I retail & use Dermalogica. Their brand & products are so great to work with. All products are plant-based, cruelty-free, gluten-free, paraben-free, vegan friendly, & no added fragrance!
What sets me apart is my personality & approach to things. I have a big personality, so I can sometimes be a lot for some, but for most, I am welcoming & fun. I make my job fun & a relaxing environment. My approach is different because I look at all of our options. I will research skincare if Dermalogica is outside your budget range. I will make sure you’re confident & comfortable in the skin you have!
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I was born & raised here in Myrtle Beach! I love the beach, food, & the local love here. We have all kinds of options for food & drinks. A few of my favorite spots are Handley’s Pub & Grub, Island Bar & Grill (Surfside), Taqueria Guanajuato, The Porch & Romani’s (Socastee), Yamato’s Japanese Steakhouse, Manta Steak & Seafood Sushi Bar. The only thing I don’t like is that we got rid of Hard Rock/Freestyle Park. I miss it & it would’ve been great if someone could keep up with it.
