Inspiring Conversations with Haley Milam of Haley Milam Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Milam.

Hi Haley, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was a stay-at-home mom for the last 8 years and I wanted to be able to work, enjoy what I do, & have a career where I could still be heavily involved in my kid’s lives. Photography came out of nowhere honestly. I received a camera for my birthday one year and started taking pictures of my kids. I had this late-night, anxiety-ridden, rabbit hole moment and from there I started following Hope Taylor Photography.

I started with her Youtube channel learning the different techniques, lighting, posing, you name it! I took a full year of free work just to become familiar with and build the back end of the business. Then started getting into the wedding industry – which is magical. I spent the last 2 years growing and niching down to being a Wedding & Senior Photographer. In 2022, I moved to South Carolina and I have spent the last year getting to know the area and building up my clientele here.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha! No way. I have taken breaks in my career because I was not confident. I have struggled HEAVILY with marketing, social media, and imposter syndrome, you name it!

I do not have a college degree, so I am completely self-taught. Trial and error have been my best friend. I have made so many mistakes with my clients, techniques, etc.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Haley Milam Photography is my 3rd child. I built this business from the ground up with nothing but a laptop, a camera & no sleep. Haha! I specialize in Wedding & Senior Photography. My photo style is a mixture between Light/Moody & Bright.

One thing that sets me apart is my client experience. My clients are truly a part of my HMP Family. I spend the most precious moments with my clients. This is their Wedding day or their last year of high school before going out and starting their lives. I capture raw emotions with my posing system of movement. Getting to know my clients is a part of my experience & a part of the shoot itself. To make beautiful photos, you have to build trust and have a true relationship with them.

Part of my brand is the relationship, I have with my clients. They’re so much more than that – they are truly my friends.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Oh gosh, where do I even start…

My dad had this old Jeep Wrangler that he just had to have! Let me paint this picture – Florida, dewy mornings after a rain storm, No doors & a water-filled cloth bikini top on a Jeep Wrangler.

So… every morning we had to drive my younger brother to daycare. For safety reasons, I had to ride in the back because it was a bikini top and my younger brother needed the doors for protection in case of an accident. So I sat in the backseat. Harmless right? WRONG!

As a sick and twisted joke, my dad decided that every morning he felt the need to empty the water-filled cloth bikini top by quickly backing up and brake checking us – which entailed all of the water that pooled the night before to waterfall all over the… yep, you guessed it.

The backseat, where I sat. So there I sat, completely soaked, listening to the howling laughter from the front seat.

There was nothing better than watching my dad and brother silently gasping for air from all of the laughter. For the record, I am almost 30 and it still makes them die from laughter.
