Today we’d like to introduce you to Folami Geter.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m Folami Geter, Chef, and Owner of A Peace of Soul Vegan Kitchen. I’m a Columbian SC native and I’ve lived here for the majority of my life. I was raised vegetarian and became vegan as a young adult.
I’ve never eaten meat and preparing vegan meals has always been a way of life for me. I purchased Lamb’s Bread Vegan Cafe (one of the 1st 100% Plant-Based restaurants in the Southeast) from my father in 2014. I rebranded the business in 2017 and began renovation on my brick-and-mortar in 2018.
During the renovation, while the restaurant was closed, I purchased a food trailer and we toured much of the Southeast sharing our plant-based comfort food with neighboring states. We reopened in February 2020 right before the pandemic began.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road but very much a rewarding one. Obstacles have existed every step of the way but we’re resilient. I have a very solid team around me, they’re family and I couldn’t ask for better team members. We take all of our growing pains in stride and push through.
We’ve been impressed with A Peace of Soul Vegan Kitchen, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A Peace of Soul Vegan is a 100% Plant-Based restaurant specializing in comfort food. We offer healthy alternatives to your favorite indulgences. We’ve been in business since 2005 and we’ve watched veganism grow in leaps and bounds.
We are most proud of carving out our place in the culinary landscape of the South. Our cuisine appeals to Vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores alike. We’ve become a very recognizable brand and have been recognized by USA Today as one of the top 20 Vegan Restaurants in the Southeast, The Food Network, and Free Times Best of Columbia.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Resilience is essential to building a successful business. Change is inevitable and you must be able to maintain and grow through ups and downs.
