Today we’d like to introduce you to Chinescha King.
Hi Chinescha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started when I was ten years old when my parents taught me how to cook. At that age, I used to make simple things like grilled cheese sandwiches and breakfast items. My love for cooking started after that. The older I got, my cooking skills increased. By the age of 12 I was cooking full meals, such as chicken and dumplings. At that age, I remember I used to write grocery lists to give to my parents of the ingredients I needed for a recipe. Since then my love for cooking has greatly advanced to where I am now with my business.
Sweet But Not So Sweet started because one day my fiance suggested to me I should start a business since I love to cook. After his suggestion I did some research on how I could start a food business without breaking the bank. Little behold, I found out how to start a baking business under the Cottage Food Law and I never looked back. A lot of people always ask how I came up with the name; one day my fiance and I were brainstorming over what to name the business and he came up with the name “Sweet But Not So Sweet”. It was pretty catchy so I went forward with it. Next, I had to figure out what I would sell that would differentiate me from other bakers around and brownies came to mind. I decided to take a leap of faith and go forward into crafting my gourmet brownies.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far it has been a smooth road for my business. I’ve been in business for about 6 months now and I’m still learning the ins and outs of my business.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My business is called Sweet But Not So Sweet. I craft gourmet brownies which are a step up from traditional brownies. My menu has an array of unique flavors such as Pecan Pie, Lemon, Red Velvet Cookie Butter, White Chocolate, Red Velvet, S’mores, and Salted Caramel; I also sell chewies. I plan to add more flavors in the near future. My unique flavors set me apart from other bakers. For instance, customers always tell me that they never heard of lemon brownies before. I’m most proud of how people recognize my logo and branding. I appreciate how people give me insight on how they either encountered my business before or how someone that they know did. That makes me feel like I’m doing what I need to do in order to get my business out there. I would love for your readers to know that Sweet But Not So Sweet sells online also via website. We sell our brownies by the dozen and half dozen. We also offer pickup and delivery. We are available for special events, weddings, baby showers, food truck nights, and more. What’s next?
Right now my plans for the future are to continue to market my business to the public by attending events. I plan to add new flavors to my menu next year. I also plan to be involved in more events and festivals next year.
