Inspiring Conversations with Barron Nason of NasonCare, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barron Nason.

Barron Nason

Hi Barron, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
In medical school, I read a novel series by John D McDonald called The Adventures of Travis McGee. He was a private investigator in South Florida living on the Busted Flush boat because he had won it in a poker game. I decided I wanted to live that lifestyle, and after graduation lived on a Marine Trader trawler for five years. After taking the boat from New Orleans to Charleston, South Carolina, through the Bahamas, I decided life on the water was for me. After that, I spent many years building medical centers and other businesses and only recently came across the opportunity to buy a 2002 Sunseeker Manhattan 64. The yacht was the perfect size for chartering harbor cruises in Charleston Harbor. Eleven years ago, when the economy crashed, I was negotiating the purchase of a 92-foot Jones Goodell yacht fish when my wife told me that she was pregnant with our daughter Sadie. We had to pass on that motor yacht because we didn’t want two small children, two dogs, and a newborn baby running back and forth on the dock in the rain. Now that I finally have my motor yacht, I named her Lady Sadie.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Buying a twenty-year-old boat always has its challenges. Expect to spend three times as much money as expected and find additional problems that can only be discovered once the boat is in the boat yard on blocks. Once you find a significant problem, you have no choice but to invest in listing a fraction of the yard repairs; my diesel turbos required rebuilding, aftercoolers needed replacing, and new engine mounts were replaced. The boat was supposed to be in the yard for two months and took six. Anytime I inquired, I only heard it’ll be two more weeks. It is of supreme importance to be liquid to be able to start a motor yacht charter business since you cannot predict all these problems. When the boat is in the yard, and the owner can’t pay, they put a lien on it until it gets paid or sold at auction.

As you know, we’re big fans of NasonCare, LLC. What can you tell our readers who might not be as familiar with the brand?
I am a board-certified emergency physician, but my passion is building medical centers. My current practice offers primary, urgent, and employee care because we care, NasonCare. We are unique, and we are a one-stop shop for healthcare. Patients come to NasonCare because they know we will fix their problem or send them for definitive care. We are located in North Charleston, SC, in a former free-standing ER with an ER doc next to preventive medicine providers. We are open every day and do not require appointments.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of my most important lessons is to surround yourself with talented people with high moral character. It should not matter how talented someone is if they do not have integrity and an accurate moral compass. I can teach people many things, but to have character is not one of them. I have lost a $30 million business to a failed partnership. Today, I will not associate myself with anyone in the business world unless my gut tells me we are a match.
