Hi Vershawn, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Lancaster picked me when I took a leap of Faith to change careers. I always loved to cook, and the pieces came together when I found a home and a business in the county. I began my culinary journey after seeing students through a glass window at Johnson and Wells and decided to enroll, and soon after, she graduated at the top of my class. After 12 years as a paralegal, I left the law world and am now realizing my cooking dream by opening Southern Dish 101. My Culinary Center is a community hub. Through Cooking Classes, Pop-Up Meals, and Special Events, we’re creating good times through good food. Our goal is to breathe life into historic downtown Lancaster. I have catered numerous events for elected officials, colleges, and organizations such as the United Way of Lancaster and the Carolina Panthers.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I am learning when to walk away and take a break! My business is like a 3rd baby to me. I wake up a night thinking about new recipes or new events we can produce to bring together our community.
We’ve been impressed with Southern Dish 101, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart?
We aim to provide a fun and safe culinary learning experience where customers can enjoy delicious Southern-inspired recipes made with wholesome ingredients and sustainable proteins. Also, offering an elegant venue for special occasions by providing an atmosphere of intimate ambiance and our full-service catering services.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Running a business in a small southern town has taught me the importance of networking. Everyone knows everybody, and word of mouth can make or break you. Treat everyone with kindness, respect, and quality service!
