Hidden Gems: Meet Tre’la Peters of Mama T Herbs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tre’la Peters.

Tre’la, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Tre’la Peters, I am the owner of Mama T Herbs. I started my business in July 2019 with no sense of direction. Just a girl who had just moved to South Carolina the year before always known to quit my jobs because they didn’t bring me a sense of peace. The one thing I always did well and enjoyed most was health and wellness. Focusing on the mind, body and soul was something I had done since I was a kid. When 2017 hit and I was told that I was going to be on steroid shots and migraine medicine due to some underlying health concerns, I took matters into my own hands. I went cold turkey vegan and haven’t really looked back since. After having my daughter in 2018 and taking a break from the Verizon call center, I knew Verizon wasn’t my end goal anymore and my soul wasn’t happy. I waited a full 6 months before I changed perspectives to get the nerve to chase what I desired. I stayed up until midnight getting my business together in one single night in the summer of 2019. The following day I officially started selling nothing but Seamoss & elderberry out my small apartment and at the call center. In November, my husband told me if I was so unhappy quit my job so I did and I felt foolish after doing it but I was so happy. In 2019, my wonderful friend offered her space to me for a low affordable cost but the pandemic was about to start so of course that ended quickly. I went on throughout the pandemic trying to find my way to generate revenue while sticking to Mama T Herbs guidelines. I committed to my business in 2020 when I have seen how happy my soul was but my bank account wasn’t so happy. I started to invest in myself from getting my birthing doula certification to writing things down that I envisioned for myself and Mama T Herbs. The vision I have for my business is to conveniently provide families access to herbs everywhere. I have since wholeheartedly started to fulfill that vision on Haywood Road in August of this year selling tinctures and single herbs for a wide range of ailments. I am now gearing up to place these same tinctures in multiple locations around the world to help people stop looking to western medicine and take charge of their own health.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of my biggest challenges is moving far away from my own support system which lead to me having minimum support with my kids. The inconsistent support at one point created a ripple effect in my business because I couldn’t achieve what I was trying to achieve with the kids around 24/7. That lead me having to reevaluate how to generating more traction for my business with the little bit of opportunity I had. Also another challenge is marketing and creating content has been another challenge as a small business owner who wears many hats. I had to learn to cut cost so I could spend it on things that matters like Nannie’s and marketing managers. Everyone’s challenges will look different but do not compare or give up.
