Hidden Gems: Meet Tanya Taylor of EPM Detailing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Taylor.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
It was January of 2018, my 2 boys came to me and my husband, Jeff, and proposed to us an idea they had about opening up an Automotive Detailing Shop. We prayed about it and God gave us a clear vision.

At first, we started with a mobile unit. I, my husband, and our youngest son, Kevin, would detail vehicles on the go or out of our home garage. But 6 months of doing this, we knew we needed to be someplace more centrally located, so we opened up our current physical location in Taylors, SC – in August 2018.

Kevin would run the shop during the week and Jeff would help on the weekends since we had corporate jobs to attend to during the week. We continued the mobile unit but eventually had to go strictly with the physical location. After a year of doing this, the business got to a point where we were turning work away because we didn’t have enough help for all the jobs coming in…

So, stepping out in faith, I handed my resignation in at my job to go to work for our family-owned and operated business. I worked part-time at my corporate job and part-time at our business. After another year, the business grew to a point that part-time wasn’t good enough it was time to step out completely from the corporate world and finally work full time for me.

It’s been 2 years since I did this and I’m so happy I did. My husband actually left his corporate job of 19 years and came to work for the business full time over a year ago. We’ve never looked back.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m sure every business has struggles or challenges. It’s definitely a learning process. Never owning a business before, we have to understand our client base and also the ins and outs of front and back-end work.

Some days are smooth and some days require patience and understanding. Some of our challenges are understanding the process of dealing with employees, developing relationships, and educating our customers on our work. Every customer is unique and requires a different level of our attention.

A struggle for sure is the thought of hiring people into a family business, that is just not easy. Currently, we are struggling with thoughts of “do I stay where we are” or “do we move into the next level” of a bigger building, more employees, etc. Going to the “next” level can be a difficult decision but it’s a decision we make as a family.

A great story… and it’s all true. They do a wonderful job and truly care about the customer. They’ve done several of my cars. I was one of the first customers that they had working out of their home garage. They have worked so hard to make the business successful, it’s really great to see.
