Hidden Gems: Meet Shawn Stuart of Full Circle Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Stuart.

Can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today. You can include as little or as much detail as you’d like.
I was born in Brooklyn NY & raised in Catskill, NY. I graduated high school in 1998 and joined the US Air Force October,.1998. My primary career field was Security Forces. Due to the unique nature of the military I was also able to have many other job opportunities that helped foster my passion for teaching, leading, mentoring, coaching and staying physically fit.

One of my first endeavors as a young Airman in the US Air Force that let me know being physically fit was more mental than physical was graduating the Phoenix Raven program as Raven #720. It was this tactical course where I learned some valuable life lessons: 1. people can be good and still need help 2. if you keep a positive attitude everything is better & 3 mental fortitude is makes the body capable of achieving all things. I also spent 8 years as a combat instructor teaching Airman how to survive in hostile environments by using effective communication, team work, tactical maneuvering, triage and how to effectively use their weapon systems under extreme stress to defend their lives and the lives of others. One of my most humbling and most rewarding jobs of my career was as a squad leader in Iraq. Most of my career was leading troops, teams and missions but it was under the worst of the terrible circumstances of combat I was humbled to see how selfless we as people can be when we care about each other. What I learned during that combat tour I try to give people in my gym everyday. A reason to keep going, try one more time, anything is possible if it’s what you want and you are the most important part to any equation so you must take care of yourself to take care of others. Full Circle Fitness was created to take care of others how each person needs it.

Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

No part of my business journey has been smooth. I began looking for a building for Full Circle Fitness in January 2020. In February I found it and started lease negotiations and then in March COVID 19 shut down the country. I was given the opportunity to get out of the lease but wavering on my goals is not something I can do. Life is too short to be putting off dreams, goals, and opportunities. With the support of my wife and my personal circle I stayed the course of building the first and only black owned gym in Summerville, SC. The pandemic during my first 6-8 months of opening made marketing almost impossible. The concept of semi personal training is still very new and I had few available outlets to try to explain it.

What should we know?
Full Circle Fitness is designed to train, educate, and advance every member as an individual. There is no one size fits all approach. Every form of fitness has a place, but that place isn’t with everyone. People have to know their goals and capabilities to ensure what they are trying to achieve is not only doable but realistic. My job his to help them with that. Training needs to be personally dialed in for it to be successful and sustainable. I do that for every member.

What do you do, what do you specialize in?
I specialize in strength and conditioning training, weight loss training, athletic training, and I’m a certified nutritionist.

What are you known for?
My passion to help people be successful. That comes with being very honest and very direct at times. It also comes with ensuring people stay outside their comfort zones when training, so I program my workouts to be purposeful and challenging.

The workouts are a mix of military training repetition and sets i.e., there’s a lot. Mixed with traditional functional movements and yet some unconventional compound movements for balance and agility. Training can get very mundane. Part of my goal is to keep it interesting but realistic to members goals, capability, and safety.

What sets you apart from others?
Gyms are designed for people to use the equipment and leave. I designed Full Circle Fitness that trains every person to their individual goals. The internal accountability of being part of a gym… a circle so intimate it inspires members to come on the days they don’t feel their best but want to be with the people that motivate them to keep going in their fitness journey. My job is not just taking care of my members physically but also emotionally and mentally.

What are you most proud brand wise?
My brand represents integrity, commitment, hard work, support, and education. I strive to influence one person every day to do something great, to do something that makes them better and also everyday do something healthy. My brand influences that every day for my clients, members, followers and fans.

What do you want our readers to know about your brand, offerings, services?
Your fitness is an investment that improves every other part of your life. If there is any part of your life fitness and nutrition wise you want to improve on, I’m excited to help you on your journey. Welcome to my circle.

What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
I just want to help as many people as possible achieve their fitness goals. I’d love to grow into a larger facility and develop Full Circle Fitness into a premier establishment with a circle of great trainers, nutritionist, physical therapist, and life coaches. A one stop shop of total health and great quality of life.
