Hi Nikki, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I started Corporate Melanin Millennial, LLC 4 years ago – I had been writing resumes for friends for years – but I wanted to take that a step further. I knew I had the skills that were needed to help others. I took courses, I got certified, and I made sure that I knew how to help people reach inside of themselves and get not only the job they wanted – but the salaries as well.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road for me to be honest – the hardest part is continually being updated about multiple industries. I stay up to date on industry trends and continually learn.
One of my earlier clients was really into Blockchain – it took me a lot of research to be confident enough to help coach them into their ideal career.
As you know, we’re big fans of Corporate Melanin Millennial, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am the owner of Corporate Melanin Millennial, LLC – I specialize in resume writing, career coaching, and LinkedIn development for millennials of color in the corporate world.
There are many resume writers in the world – but millennials of color deal with a completely different set of circumstances. Resume writing is just the beginning of what I do. I write resumes that yield results. I have helped people land roles from customer success to Director of Transportation to VP of Communications.
As far as my brand goes – I’m proud when people watch my social media accounts and call me and say “You’re relatable. I look at you and I see me.” My coaching sessions are more like hang-out sessions. We take a deep dive into why you want what you want, take the time to understand a variety of industries, interview coaching, creating detailed and optimized LinkedIn accounts.
I want your readers to understand that a career coach does not “do it for you” – we give you the skills. We give you the box of tricks – but a lot of the work still falls on the client. If you have homework of researching 3 jobs a week – you still have to do that in order to get to the next stage of the coaching relationship. It’s not a quick fix.
I am a very transparent, honest, and blunt coach who gives the best because I want the best for my clients.
What do you think about happiness?
I am happiest when I get joy calls because my client got an interview. I’m happy with squeals of surprise when they get salary increases because they finally learned their worth. I’m happiest pouring into other people.
