Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Fetten.
Hi Marc, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m a entrepreneur at heart, just driven to solve the world’s challenges by bringing the best and brightest people together, empowering them, funding them and building successful businesses. I’ve had the privilege of growing up all over the world, three continents, 5 countries and through that have been able to learn the best from the incredibly diverse cultures that inhabit our planet.
In 2018, I decided to start my latest business, GreenGasUSA, designed to address the challenges of global warming and climate change by capturing greenhouse gas emissions from waste. In simplest terms, we take agricultural waste, trap harmful greenhouse gas emissions such as methane and CO2, and convert it into renewable natural gas indistinguishable from conventional natural gas. This gas is then used by industry, businesses and residents that wish to reduce or eliminate their use of fossil fuels and replace those with renewable fuels. We now operate 5 facilities across the US with over 20 more under development. In our short company history, we have captured the equivalent of 350,000 tons of carbon dioxide and eliminated it from going to the atmosphere and causing global warming. That is the same as the emissions from 77,000 gasoline powered passenger vehicles.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Our work is incredibly meaningful to the future of our plant. And while it is not easy, it is easy to be passionate about, so much so that our purpose is almost addictive. We feel like we can’t do enough, quickly enough which creates incredible drive in our organization. Some of the challenges have included:
- Financing
- Gaining trust
- Perfecting technology
- Putting the right team together
Financing a project in the renewable energy space is an expensive and stressful endeavor. It takes a lot of patience and people to help along the way to help finance the company. Another struggle was gaining trust. The agricultural sector is traditionally quite conservative and we are proposing to change the way waste is viewed and handled. Our farming partners feel like they are taking a risk by changing their processes; since our technology was new in the United States, there was always the potential that something could go wrong, get overlooked, or any other common mistake. However, the need for change in how we view emissions as a society across industries is changing and that has helped form deep and meaningful partnerships with companies and farmers that just want to do the right thing for our collective future and frankly, make their own products and brands better.
Building a good team is often a challenge for small companies. I am a big believer in making the key team members part owners of my businesses. It has helped align and motivate us a team so that we can best meet the challenges and opportunities ahead.
We’ve been impressed with GreenGasUSA, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a growing business with much more room for growth. Our aspiration and goals are to capture every molecule of fugitive methane worldwide so that our children can enjoy the planet as we have and possibly even more. We specialize in carbon and methane capture, specifically using an anaerobic digestion process. We constantly innovate new technologies and operating procedures to develop new solutions for our customers. We were the first company in our region and space to become operational in the United States. We believe firmly in accurate and proper carbon accounting so that we can measure what positive impact we are having on the environment and continue to improve every day.
Lastly, we are a place where people can learn and grow to fulfill their personal, career and idealistic ambitions. It is incredibly rewarding to help people reach their full potential, come together as a team and develop solutions that didn’t exist yesterday. We foster that environment in our business every day and believe that it makes us the best renewables company in the market
