Hidden Gems: Meet Joshua Masters of Long Ridge Development & Properties, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Masters.

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
Raised in Kannapolis, North Carolina, and growing up near the enchanting Low Country of coastal South Carolina, I developed a profound passion for architectural design and the unique styles prevalent in the region. From a young age, I nurtured my fascination for creating and building, inspired by the charm and allure of the coastal surroundings. Early in my career, I had the unique opportunity to work alongside a prominent architect who became my mentor, igniting my passion further and imparting invaluable knowledge. I honed my skills and gained a comprehensive understanding of design principles. The more I delved into the field, the clearer my vision became. While working with the architect, my Childhood friend Matthew Black approached me with a visionary idea during this time. We shared a deep admiration for building and construction. Therefore we decided to embark on a joint venture. Together we founded Long Ridge Development & Properties, LLC, to create and build designs that captivated the essence of low country style homes and design.

We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
During our journey, we encountered numerous challenges while working on our concepts. One significant obstacle we faced was the limited availability of suitable locations for our distinctive design style. Urban low-country development typically calls for densely constructed buildings, and finding appropriate sites aligned with our vision proved complex. However, the timing of our venture couldn’t have been more suitable. Kannapolis, once a textile mill town, underwent a remarkable transformation and cultural revitalization, particularly in its downtown area. Recognizing the city’s significant investment of millions of dollars into its redevelopment, we saw a perfect opportunity to contribute by investing in downtown urban properties.

Motivated by our passion and belief in the project’s potential, we boldly decided to acquire nearly 20 acres of the downtown area. This strategic acquisition would empower us to create pocket communities that not only embodied the charm of the low country but also facilitated a sense of walkability and community throughout the downtown area.

We embarked on the ambitious task of crafting designs that would capture the essence of Charleston’s dense development. Our goal was to recreate the vibrant atmosphere and architectural allure associated with places like Charleston while infusing it with the unique character of Kannapolis.

Through meticulous planning and a deep understanding of urban design principles, we have successfully transformed our acquired properties into thriving communities. These pocket communities boast distinctive architectural elements inspired by the low country, creating a sense of cohesion and continuity throughout the downtown area.

Our dedication to our concept ensures that residents and visitors can navigate the vibrant streets, immersing themselves in the rich cultural experience that Kannapolis offers by blending urban density with the timeless elegance of the low country.

As we continue our journey, we remain committed to pushing boundaries, exploring innovative solutions, and creating urban spaces that harmoniously blend the past and present. Our ongoing work is a testament to our passion for the low country style while embracing the spirit of urban revitalization.

We’ve been impressed with Long Ridge Development & Properties, LLC, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our distinctive building style embraces a combination of features that create homes of undeniable charm and warmth. With a focus on creating inviting spaces, we incorporate multi-level porches, large welcoming windows, and interiors designed to make occupants feel at ease and comfortable. One of our signature approaches is adapting our designs to fit narrow lots, maximizing available space. Additionally, when crafting custom homes, we consider the unique features of the surrounding environment, whether it’s a picturesque golf course or a serene body of water, ensuring that the design seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.

Incorporating elements such as piazzas or lanais adds elegance and functionality to our homes. These outdoor spaces provide a tranquil retreat where residents can enjoy the beauty of their surroundings and indulge in the relaxed Southern lifestyle.

Our commitment to creating memorable aesthetics extends to the color palette we utilize. Drawing inspiration from the coastal sea islands and the historic colors of Charleston, we incorporate unique and carefully selected hues that reflect the region’s rich heritage. By using specialized color palettes derived from the timeless charm of Charleston, we infuse each home with a touch of history and a nod to the architectural traditions that have shaped the Low Country.

We consider ourselves fortunate to be continuously inspired by the wealth of unique buildings that grace the Low Country. These architectural gems have evolved, initially influenced by Greek Revival architecture, acquiring their distinctive “Low Country charm.” We draw inspiration from this rich heritage, infusing our designs with a sense of history and a deep appreciation for the timeless beauty that characterizes the region.
