Hidden Gems: Meet Christina Richardson of CR Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Richardson.

Hi Christina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Northern Sweden and always knew I wanted to be an Architect. I have been immensely interested in building and design since I was 5 years old. I used to sit and draw floor plans of my friend’s houses when the other children played with Barbie. I went to a construction engineering high school and added an extra year to get a bachelor’s in construction engineering to prepare the way of getting into architecture school. Becoming a designer was more complex than one might think. The Swedish universities for architecture only accept 60 students per year. After applying 5 years in a row, I decided to become a Mechanical engineer and start working for the big mining company in my hometown. I was only in it for the money, but I had a great career, and I kept my design company on the side, helping people with floor plans, building permits, and additions. In 2015, my husband got a job offer in the US, and I finally saw my chance to start working as a designer full-time.

We moved, and I got a degree and a certification as an interior designer from the New York Institute of Art and Design. I opened my American Design business in 2016. The company has grown, and we are working across the US, Canada, and Scandinavia, and many of our clients either live in or have second homes in Hilton Head Island and the surrounding areas. We love South Carolina: the mossy oaks, the beaches, and the people. We love walking our clients through their design journey, and we focus on how they want their spaces to feel. We want to create beautiful and very personal homes that tell the story of our clients, their interests, and their dreams.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Everything is a learning curve, from working with contractors to different building codes in other countries to managing client expectations, excitement, and frustrations.

We’ve been impressed with CR Interiors, but for folks who might need to be more familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart?
Scandinavians are known for working with light and beautiful, functional spaces, no matter the style. We always work with something we call THE RED THREAD. Several themes and small “easter eggs” with clues tie our design together and create a beautiful flow and surprising elements throughout the design. To work that way, we need to get to know our clients personally; that’s just how we love to work.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Being in my aunt’s summer house, painting and printing fabrics with our patterns
