Hidden Gems: Meet Ashleigh Wilson of IAmChic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashleigh Wilson.

Hi Ashleigh, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

The beauty world has been my passion since I was a little girl. I had a small clientele of friends and family throughout high school. Instead of working, you could catch me doing back-to-school hair from summer and holidays and I loved it.
My grandmother was a stylist and owned her own salon so I was always inspired by her. I went to cosmetology school at Trident Technical College and graduated in the summer of 2009. I worked in three different salons (JcPenny, Famous Hair, and Ulta Beauty) before opening my studio IAmChic in 2019. When I’m not working I love to travel, try new restaurants, and spend time with family and friends.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My journey for the most part has been a smooth ride although my biggest challenge was the pandemic. I didn’t struggle with business during the pandemic, but I was terrified of not making it through the pandemic because I hadn’t even been in business a complete year.  I was out of work for 7 weeks but came right back with a larger clientele than when I started.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about IAmChic?

I am a hairstylist, salon owner, and a cosmetology instructor.

I am a multicultural stylist that specializes in extensions, cutting, coloring, and straightening/smoothing treatments.

I’m mostly known for being a multicultural stylist, and having a diverse clientele… being a multicultural stylist and offering a variety of services is what sets me apart from others. I am mostly proud of my brand showcasing diversity. I want anyone who sits in my chair no matter their race, hair texture, or color to feel great about their service and feel absolutely beautiful when they leave.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?

Being self-employed during Covid taught be a great lesson of work-life balance, and boundaries in business. Pre pandemic I was so nervous to fail that I would be available to work in the salon six out of the seven days a week. I was close to burning myself out and wanting to go back to working for someone else before we were shut down.

I had a better appreciation for my schedule when I came back to work from being shut down. It was a really important lesson due to the fact in a salon suite you work every position in the salon.
