Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Owens.
Hi Amanda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Prior to discovering my path as a massage therapist, I had solely worked in the restaurant industry with most of my experience coming from growing up in my family’s fast food franchise. Beginning at a young age, I would sample nuggets in the middle of the mall, the place where I would unknowingly meet my future husband for the first time at 12 years old. I attended Coastal Carolina University, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with the intent of following in my family’s footsteps. Life had other plans and I began waiting tables in my mid-20s. After being a server for some time, I began to crave a career in something more creative and something where I could help others. Like an imaginary light bulb turning on over my head, I remembered an incredibly meaningful moment from a few years prior that led me to choosing Massage Therapy.
That moment was the day I was given the very special gift of helping make my Mom the most comfortable she could have been on her last day on Earth. At the urging of a family friend who is a nurse, her and I bathed my Mom and I applied lotion on her skin that was itchy from the Morphine. I could tell when I was putting lotion on her legs (she was non-verbal at this point) that she was thankful and the way she curled her hands and nestled them together told me she was finding comfort in what I was doing. My light bulb moment was the image of my Mom’s hands nestling together that day. I realized I could help other people to feel comfortable in their body through massage, the same way I had helped her that day. And so, without hesitation, l signed up for a Massage Therapy program.
When I started my own Massage Therapy practice, I began renting a room alongside my childhood friend, Meredith Miller, who is an esthetician and another Massage Therapist, Jenn Thomas, who would turn into a beautiful friend. Eventually the three of us would become business partners and we would open Rooted & Radiant Wellness Collective together.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I try not to look at the path as being smooth or rough because that’s subjective, right? I think there are always challenges, but that doesn’t define the whole path. A lot of growth can happen through those challenges. I wouldn’t say our journey has necessarily been smooth, but every step has brought us to where we are today.
A perfect example happened recently. We were suddenly without a workspace when our previous rental location closed down abruptly. In that moment, the ‘easy’ route would have been for us all to go our separate ways, finding other rooms to rent, or even going back to work for someone else. In life, you don’t always have control over what happens to you, but you DO get to choose how you respond to it. We chose tenacity, we chose determination and we chose to follow our dreams. We used that momentum to form and launch Rooted & Radiant Wellness Collective. To say I’m proud of how much we accomplished in a short amount of time would be an understatement.
As you know, we’re big fans of Rooted & Radiant Wellness Collective . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
