Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Kushel.
Hi Wendy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Late Bloomer? Maybe? Everything comes together eventually and I love that all the past experiences of my life are what is giving me the skills to build my company. I was a “Carnie” in my teens at the pier in Ocean City, MD- armed with a microphone using comedic skills to lure the customers to my game of skills- Fish Pond. Sales. I lived in NYC and worked as an actress and a stand up comedian.- Think on your feet. Food & Beverage Sales- get your goal. I am lucky because I have figured out how to get out of my own way and realize that anything is possible with hard work and determination. I can see great success in my future- I believe in the power of me.
My Why? Hah!! because I want to prove to myself that everything I’m doing is because I’m right- that Success is meant for me and therefore meant for ANYONE who puts their minds to it-
I started this company with one product- a locally made body scrub- if I hadn’t of shown up with that first product the idea for The Hand Scrub Line would not have come to me- but I was in the game- so I get to play- and I plan to continue “playing” and growing- and working every day to live my best life-
oh yeah- and the story-lol- started from scratch – an idea for a great gift, an idea for a container and every day I worked at it- all the while working full time as a liquor salesman for a large national distributor.
Highlight- Podcast with Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran- a one on one zoom call with her- She gave me great advice- helped me to prioritize my tasks and still keep in touch.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Oh Boy- almost lost my $$$ for my first order of jars- about 2 months after my order was placed I learned about this Anti Dumping tax which if passed by the International Trade Administration would have caused my jars to be taxed 248%- that would have ruined me right out of the gate- since then there have been lots of problems- bad labels, bad web designer… always gonna have problems- but successful people solve and move forward and that’s my plan.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about WENDALA’S® LOWCOUNTRY SUGAR SCRUB?
WENDALA’S® is vibrant and funny. We make fun products and we have fun showing consumers and retailers how great they are. First of all – in the local market we stand up and own our medium. Our package jumps at you- silver tins -that are recyclable and reusable. We use our sense of humor in our marketing- especially in the social media arena- check out our insta-@lowcountrysugarscrub or TikTok @sugarsugar2022.
Brand-wise- I’m so proud of the integrity of our products- the ingredients are clean, natural and many are organic. I love when we demo the scrubs that are made with the herbal essential oils. We have them rub smoked salmon and garlic and onions all up in their hands and then rinse and scrub with the Eucalyptus Lavender, Rosemary Mint, or one of the other herbal scrubs- and Poof- all wonky smells are gone!
Stay tuned for our Groovy Hippie Line coming soon- WENDALA’S® SHAVE SCRUBS, HAIR PRODUCTS, and FACE SCRUBS.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I’ve cleaned houses and collected cans for $$ when I’ve been down and out- that’s why I expect great work from my staff- I believe the boss needs to know how to do the dishes- and I’m not afraid to do it again-
