Exploring Life & Business with Sean McNanney of SAVED NY

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean McNanney.

Sean McNanney

Hi Sean, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a collector of things ever since I can remember. Even as a child, I was into antiques and textiles thanks to my grandmother, who took me to quilting bees with her. When I first came to New York, I started doing fashion styling, designing clothes, and collecting everything made between the 1800s and 1910s. I eventually opened the first Saved store in Williamsburg, where I was able to bring together my love of design, art, and antiques for the first time. After working at Ralph Lauren Home, I better understood what I could do with my own space and how I could develop an extraordinary line of home textile products. I let my imagination guide me to my next step, and that’s how I got here.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There’s been struggles, for sure. It’s always a winding road to get where you want to go. Working with individual artisans from all over the world is lovely but has challenges. You need to take into consideration what is going on in their lives as well as in the countries that they are in. At the same time, you’re trying to run a competitive business in New York, so it takes a lot of juggling and creativity to keep everyone happy.

As you know, we’re big fans of SAVED NY. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
First and foremost, I’m an interior designer and a collector who also owns a cashmere company. My brand, Saved NY, is known for its exquisitely soft, dreamy cashmere and stores with a cabinet of curiosities vibe. I travel frequently for business, hunting for antiques and local gems wherever I am.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
My first mentor was my art teacher in high school, who inspired me to lead with creativity and set me on my path as an artist. My grandmother, who used to take me to quilting bees as a child, was also a significant influence. That’s how I got introduced to and fell in love with textiles.
