Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Keys.
Hi Maurice, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have always had an immense interest in photography, and it wasn’t a surprise since I’m a very creative person in regards to art and music. While it was always an interest; let’s be honest, Photography is not the most affordable hobby so it was not always feasible for me to indulge in my photography desires. Well, 2 years ago that all changed for me when my boss at that time, blessed me with my first professional camera. This was during the same time when Covid 19 was beginning to run rampant and the world was shutting down around us. During the shutdown, while out of work, I started to practice my craft, and it turns out, that I was pretty good at it. When my wife, Shatera Keys, saw my work and how passionate I was about it, she told me that I had a God-given gift and encouraged me to start 88 Keys Photography, and here we are today!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think that anyone who has started a new small business would ever say that the road has been totally smooth, so the answer is definitely no. Some people think that we were crazy starting a business in the middle of a global pandemic because there has been financial struggle as well as physical limitations based upon covid 19 restrictions and so on, but God has kept us through it all, and we’re still thriving!
We’ve been impressed with 88 Keys Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
88 Keys Photography is a small, black-owned photography business that specializes in different types of photography. Honestly, I don’t compare myself to others. My biggest competition is myself. I always want to one-up myself which is why studying, attending classes, and being a sponge for knowledge is so pivotal for me. As a business, I understand that memories through photos are priceless because they tell a story of a specific point in time. When you look at a photo, it instantly takes you back to a certain moment or event, and we want EVERYONE to have the opportunity to cherish those moments so we pride ourselves on providing quality photography services while being affordable.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success is finding your true God-given purpose and living in it. I truly believe that once you know your true purpose and fully act on it, your gift will make room for you! That what the Bible tells us, and that’s what I stand on!
