Today we’d like to introduce you to Keziah Felak.
Hi Keziah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I started Bek Designs in March 2017 as a side hustle to make a little extra money with the full intent of closing it down once I climbed the ladder in the corporate world. I grew up telling myself that I didn’t have what it took to run and grow a successful business, so that is why I never thought Bek Designs would be anything more than a side hustle.
Fast forward to 2020 and my business had grown more than I ever thought it would. I came to a place in my corporate job that left me at a crossroads: I could either stay comfortable where I was and wonder what my life would be like as a full-time business owner or I could trust God’s plan for my life and take the leap. So, I took the leap – in the middle of a global pandemic and it has been the best decision I have ever made.
Since I took the leap into full-time entrepreneurship, I have also co-founded another business called Worth. Women, that encourage, educate and empower other women to lean into their passion + purpose and build a life they don’t need an escape from.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not. Entrepreneurship and owning a business are hardwork – but it is so worth it. This journey constantly challenges me to get out of my own way and stay uncomfortable.
One of the biggest challenges in owning a business is a mindset and believing in yourself and your capabilities. It is so easy to compare your success/business to others and it’s one of the things I have had to work on the most. I remind myself daily of the saying “The only competition I have is the person I was yesterday” but I’m not going to lie – it gets hard.
I also have to bring up the state of staying uncomfortable – that is tough! We as humans gravitate towards being comfortable, that’s what our brains tell us to do… because being comfortable is easy. But as a business owner, if you stay comfortable you will not grow, that’s the bottom line. So, staying in that uncomfortable place is a challenge but it’s also the place where I have seen the most growth in my business. Get comfortable being uncomfortable and you’ll succeed.
We’ve been impressed with Bek Designs, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Bek Designs offers custom design services and specializes in fine art wedding stationery and small business branding + website design.
What sets Bek Designs apart from others is my client experience. I believe that businesses sell a feeling or emotion – not a product or service. I want each and every person I work with to leave feeling happy and in love with their designs. I pride myself on going the extra mile for my clients and not only delivering a beautiful design, but also an incredible experience that they want to tell others about. Making others feel good about buying from you is the key!
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I think the biggest surprise that most people might not know is that I started my business with the full intent to close it down after a couple of years. It was begun to bring in a little extra money on the side but God had way bigger plans for it and my life.
I truly always believed that I was a follower and would always work for someone because I didn’t have what it took. That’s the great thing about God though – he has constantly put me in situations where I had no idea what I was doing but it has taught me more and more about what I can actually handle and do. I always tell people when they start to doubt themselves: you can handle more than you think and if you just try, I promise you’ll surprise yourself.
