Exploring Life & Business with Kelly Durrette of The Showroom Charleston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Durrette.

Hi Kelly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I’ve only been in business less than one year, but I found myself wearing dresses/gowns only once to events. We ladies usually want something fresh and new for each event we attend because we enjoy documenting with great photographs. Personally, I wait until the last minute to shop, so online works sometimes, but I thought what if I opened a “rent the runway” style store here in Charleston? If I had a need, I’m sure other women do as well. Our beautiful city is a huge wedding destination, we have several charity balls/galas, and lots of various black-tie events. In my research, I came across a similar concept in Nashville, The Showroom Nashville. I reached out to owner Kristen Geyser to ask a few questions about her business model. Long story short, we decided to become partners and do some of our buying together at markets. That would lead to The Showroom Charleston!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A small challenge has been having all the different silhouettes that each customer desires day-to-day. I’m working very hard to offer many options from prom gowns to mother-of-the-bride gowns. It doesn’t happen overnight, but we’re quickly overcoming that challenge.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The Showroom Charleston rents and sells gowns and accessories. No need for an appointment. You may pop in anytime during business hours and enjoy The Showroom experience. We ask a few questions about the event your attending, colors you love and don’t love, usual dress size, and we begin pulling gowns, while you enjoy a beverage of your choice. You may rent for an event the day of or pre-book for a future event. The rental time period is 7 days, the dry cleaning is included in the rental price. We allow temporary alterations on all gowns if needed. An average gown rental price is $120…

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Do a lot of research and create a strong fan base with marketing and pop-ups everywhere before opening a brick-and-mortar.
