Today we’d like to introduce you to Kavern Lewis.
Hi Kavern, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born in Providence, Rhode Island, raised in Southern Maryland in a household of 9 siblings and my mother and Atlanta Georgia with my father. Being raised in these two locations made my siblings and I grow up fast. Building us for adulthood with heavy responsibilities and parents even though divorced, but supportive in our lives. Once I graduated from high school, I decided to move back to Providence, Rhode Island, where I began my journey into the Public Safety field as a Police Explorer and Security Officer. That then led me to Amherst, Massachusetts, where I spent 14 years of my adulthood. I began my career in Law Enforcement at a State prison. Then later moved on to other agencies serving warrants and civil process on occasions. In 2018 I made a wise decision to relocate to Charleston, SC where I briefly continued my Law Enforcement career and later opened my own Security Firm until date.
CIS Patrol Services, LLC (Criminal Interception Patrol Services) was founded in August of 2020 by me. It was a tough journey to start not knowing when I would get my first contract. There is a strong competition base in the Charleston, SC area. One thing that I have realized is that the industry is about who you know, not so much of what you can provide, due to politics. There are a handful of organizations that care about small businesses and the services provided. My first full year was very tough. I received my first client, which was two Hotels owned locally. The hardest part was keeping the crime low. We had tons of vehicles getting broken into. My contract was in jeopardy due to not being able to fulfill the needs of the customer. It has always been my mission to provide the best services that I can. So, I stayed later one morning, just to identify and apprehend the assailant (s) that were breaking into and stealing multiple vehicles on the client’s property. At this time, the female suspect was apprehended and charged with the crime. Moving forward into 2021 the hard part about owning a Security Firm is the competition and lack of exposure due to other well established companies in the area and the reputation they have in the community. Some don’t want change, and some do. But times have changed, so I began advertising more and pursuing better ideas for a safe community. We all are aware that Law Enforcement can’t be everywhere. So, it’s our job to assist them in Public Safety. I am a black-owned and operated business and it’s sometimes difficult just on that subject, but you cannot give up or give in. Continuing the good fight for a better tomorrow is my goal.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Yes, but nothing comes easy. Getting exposure is difficult, but the key in any industry. However, most people don’t like change.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
CIS is a Minority-owned company and local established in Charleston, SC 2020. We service any private or public property including HOA’s. We conduct Some Law Enforcement duties on the contracted property per the state statute (SC Title 40 Chapter 18).
We provide services anywhere in South Carolina with a variety of capacities.
