Today we’d like to introduce you to Kanisha McCrea.
Hi Kanisha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The idea of becoming a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) started my senior year during a class discussion while I was still an undergraduate student. After class, I went to my dorm room and researched more about SLPs. Before that class discussion, I was unfamiliar with an SLP. After my research, I discovered three things; how flexible the field was, the level of impact, and that I had a Speech therapist in preschool. After researching, I shortly applied to graduate schools and started my journey to become a Speech Language Pathologist. I currently work as a public school-based Speech-Language Pathologist and the owner of Coco’s Speech Therapy, LLC. As a private practice owner, I primarily serve the birth to three years old population.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing of true value comes easy. From the beginning to now, there have been challenges of different forms. The first challenge was applying to graduate school; the field of Speech-Language Pathology is very competitive. Once in a program, I face the challenge of quickly retaining a lot of new information. My bachelor’s degree was outside of Speech- Language, unlike most of my cohort. I overcame my challenges and received my Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology. Becoming a business owner created new challenges, from finding a starting point, marketing my services, and understanding insurance companies for reimbursement. All of the challenges I have faced have helped me in many different ways.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

My favorite childhood memory was Sundays. It was a day of a big, good home-cooked meal and time to spend outside with family, before school the next day.
