Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmie Wright.
Hi Jimmie, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
The House Of Hathor Columbia SC is a spiritual transformation of my wife Angela and mines. My wife asked me, If we could be in business together, what would I like to do? I responded with, A Cultural Store. My wife has experience in retail as an assistant manager and manager of clothing stores, and I have experience and knowledge in cultural history and community activism. We thought it would be a perfect match for our experiences. We then went to the Chamber of Commerce for assistance through SCORE, Where we met Mr. Tyrone Mitchell, who assisted us in creating a business plan. We started selling from our home for a short while, then started vending.
After about a year and being unsuccessful in creating an e-commerce website, we decided to find a small place to start our business. Our first store was in the Northeast area. We stayed there for two years. We could have done better there and decided to look closer at the North Columbia area. We decided to open our store in our community and start a Non-profit for community outreach. We brought speakers, politicians, community activists, and other community-minded groups from our platform. Our Ancestors have provided much for us, and to whom much is given, much is required. We are in a new location but remain in our community. We want to provide the best experience for all in our environment of cultural representation, understanding, excellence, knowledge, and wisdom. As we continue to build, live and guide, we know we will be where our Ancestors have instructed us to be.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The growing pains and challenges we faced and continue to meet are more of dealing with negative images of cultural understanding and a national epidemic that caused a lot of businesses to close. Still, we remained strong in our purpose and our intent. The need for cultural information and expressions of the culture will always exist, and we want to be at the forefront of that expression.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The mission of The House Of Hathor is to provide a (w)holistic environment offering healthy living through physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional knowledge of self. We are family and community-oriented, promoting the seven principles of Kwanzaa, which celebrates life: Unity (UMOJA); Self-determination (Kujichagulia); Collective Work and Responsibility (UJIMA); Cooperative Economics (UJAMAA); Purpose (NIA); Creativity (KUUMBA); and Faith (IMANI). The House Of Hathor is a unique and vital resource because there is a void of Cultural expression in our community. The House Of Hathor will fill this void not only with drinks, aromatherapy, skin care products, African art, and African apparel but also through community service and activism.
What are your plans for the future?
To extend our effort to uplift, encourage, inspire, and sustain our identity as a cultural foundation. The House Of Hathor Columbia SC’s plans is first to continue to be a pillar in the community. We look forward to more community-minded programs and activities that use a cultural frame of reference and assist our customers and community in recognizing that frame of reference in all living areas.
