Hi Fernanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey to where I am today has been anything but straightforward. I was born in Brazil, and I always wished to see the world. As my parents couldn’t afford to send me abroad for a year, I had to find other ways to get there. In the 90s, access to information wasn’t as easy as it is today, but my determination drove me to seek out every possible lead. Eventually I stumbled upon an opportunity that seemed tailor-made for me: the Au Pair program. This program offered me the chance to spend a year living with a family abroad while assisting with childcare and household tasks. I connected with a church organization in Germany (by sending them a letter ;), which proved to be my ticket to a new chapter in life. They introduced me to a welcoming family who agreed to host me. It was a great moment, taking that first step into the unknown, a step that would mark the beginning of my extensive international journey—a dream I never imagined could come true back then.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The most challenging part of my journey abroad was saying goodbye to my family and friends. That initial flight to Germany was a mix of excitement and sadness. But the trials didn’t end there.
Imagine being dropped into a foreign country where the language spoken is barely familiar. Deciphering German conversations felt like solving a puzzle!
After what felt like ages, I started to adjust. I came to appreciate the Germans’ direct communication style – different from what I was used to, but refreshingly honest. I made wonderful friends from all over the world, and together we tackled the challenges of expat life.
Back in Brazil, I completed my law degree and once again felt a strong desire to spend more time in Europe. I applied for a scholarship that led me back to Germany for my Master of Law, where I ultimately chose to remain, foregoing my return to Brazil.
As I was getting comfortable and establishing roots in Germany, raising my children, studying again (this time Business Administration), and starting my career, life presented another opportunity for change. The call of the UK beckoned, and I enthusiastically embraced a new chapter.
Following various journeys, which included memorable experiences in Austria, Slovakia, and forging professional ties in Portugal, my path eventually led me to Greenville two years ago. From the instant I set foot in this community, I sensed a profound connection that has deepened with each passing day.
Thanks to the heartfelt hospitality of the South, I’ve found a place I’m reluctant to leave. After 20 years of worldly journeying, I can now fully enjoy my garden while engaging with people from all over the world, all while proudly calling Greenville my home.
