Exploring Life & Business with Cameron Cox of Cox Sauce Barbecue Sauce

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Cox. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The original Cox Sauce Barbecue Sauce recipe was created by Chicken Legend and Bojangles’* cofounder, Jack Z. Fulk. Jack’s barbecue sauce recipe was not used in restaurants. It was a personal recipe he only prepared for family and friends. 

Jack retired after decades in the restaurant industry and achieving the perfect fried chicken recipe. But the Chicken Genius that he was, he could never truly stop working. Family lore says that his love for cooking and entertaining friends and family inspired him on a new chicken mission: to create the perfect sauce for grilled chicken. Jack’s barbecue sauce was instantly loved by any friends and family who were lucky enough to be invited to a Sunday cookout. When asked if he planned to bottle his recipe he replied, “No, I’m retired. Sunday afternoon is all the cooking I want to do anymore. I’m going to leave that work to the grandchildren. Just tell them it’s ‘Mr. Bojangles’’ barbecue sauce recipe. They’ll know it’s good!” 

In March 2020 Jacks’ grandson, Cameron Cox saw an opportunity to finally begin bottling his grandfather’s barbecue sauce. After a year of work, commercial Cox Sauce came to market in March 2021. 

Cox Sauce Barbecue Sauce is bottled in Charlotte, NC, and headquartered in Charleston, SC. Cox Sauce is sold online from their website, www.CoxSauceBBQSauce.com. It can also be purchased from retailers in SC, NC, VA, GA, MO, and internationally in Bermuda.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Great barbecue is made low and slow. I’ve found the barbecue sauce business to be the same. It took a year to get from “an old family recipe” to a commercial product. 

Commercial Cox Sauce has been in production for over a year now. We’re working hard to do farmers’ markets, retail demos, and events to get new customers to try Cox Sauce. 

Jack’s fried chicken has been a success. We’re determined that his grilled chicken will be too! 

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Cox Sauce Barbecue Sauce is a sweet and tangy Carolina red BBQ sauce. Carolina red sauces are traditionally made with ketchup, brown sugar, and vinegar. But Cox Sauce is also made with lemon, garlic, and ginger which gives it a sweet and tangy style not found in any other barbecue sauce. 

Cox Sauce is my grandfather’s recipe. But my wife and I work to build the brand, the website, and the business from scratch. 

I’m a personal trainer. My wife is a real estate agent. On the weekends we baste our dreams in Cox Sauce.
