Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Madden.
Hi Sean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born into an artist family. My father a painter and sculptor and my mother, a professional oil painter and teacher. Most of my formidable years were spent pursuing music and I really didn’t begin taking my artistic upbringing seriously until 2019. Since then, I have put forth great efforts, creating and getting involved in the local art community. I have works displayed in galleries, businesses and homes around the state and the country. I have also, recently, gotten involved with public art and am in the design phase for a mural commemorating the railroad history of my hometown of Irmo.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacles I’ve faced are ones that I believe confront most artists. Those are time and money. While I do make money through art sales and commission work, it doesn’t grant the security and and consistency of a full-time job. Of course, I have begun taking steps towards teaching, but that is a whole other pursuit that is still in it’s infancy stage.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My work is, primarily landscape and seascape painting. I enjoy many mediums, but oil is probably my favorite. I also quite enjoy reproducing images of buildings and local landmarks.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is doing what I enjoy and not compromising. My first couple of years in this pursuit, I would take on any project that brought me money. This included portrait work and reproduction work. Neither of which I enjoyed. And if you don’t enjoy what you’re doing, chances are you aren’t going to do great work. And if you don’t enjoy it, then it just becomes another job.
