Daily Inspiration: Meet Rodney Gray Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodney Gray Jr.

Rodney Gray Jr.

All right. Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
My name is Rodney Gray Jr.; I am a 34-year-old professional chef. My journey has been an interesting one. I graduated from the University of South Carolina and began my cooking career as a dishwasher! From the early days of replicating my family’s recipes and cooking Sunday dinners, it has turned to working in several restaurants across the Charleston area, learning and growing each step of the way. Working primarily in fine dining kitchens, I am restaurant-trained and can create and infuse my culture and upbringing within my cuisine. It does not matter if you are a renowned professional basketball player or someone who wants to celebrate their birthday in a fun and unique way. You have a friend who cooks.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The food and beverage life is the opportunity to grow continuously and develop your skills. Being agile, teachable, and willing to learn goes a long way. From personal tragedies to finding my footing as a private chef, the challenges are ever present, but being resilient and passionate carries me daily.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional chef specializing in fine dining, Italian, and soul food. I specialize in many dishes from my time in many kitchens across the low country. I am known for elevating traditional southern dishes, and designing my own takes many Italian staples. I am most proud of educating my clients about the culture and history of the dishes I serve and giving each client a unique and memorable experience. What sets me apart from others is that I am a complete-from-scratch chef who has curated and created all of his recipes that have stood the test over many years. Pushing the envelope of what it means to be a chef in terms of creativity, execution, and ideas is what I am all about.

Who else deserves credit for your story?
First and foremost, my mom was my biggest supporter. My family as a whole has always been a strong supporter of myself. As a first-generation entrepreneur, I have received support from them. Chef Michael Scognamiglio also elevated me to my first manager position, which gave me invaluable experience.
