Daily Inspiration: Meet Morgan Mattson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Mattson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Way back in high school, like everyone else, I took a ceramics class. I decided then that I wanted to teach art as a living. Once I began college at Penn State, I found my way into the ceramics studio. I signed up for as many classes there as I could fit into my schedule. I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Art Education with a focus on ceramics. Upon graduation, I got a job at Greenville High School teaching…. digital media arts. I made it my mission to bring ceramics to this wonderful school and be the ceramics teacher that I dreamed of being. I started the ceramics program from the ground up at Greenville High and now solely teach four levels of ceramics. Ceramics became all that I wanted to do, so back in 2019, I decided to make it my second job. Since then I have been playing with clay in every spare moment and sharing my work with the world!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes and no. I did get stuck in a life without clay for a while which was rough. But I’ve been very lucky in finding support for my program from my school. By teaching ceramics I have the ability to get back to making my own work. Now I just struggle with the uphill battle that is social media. An online presence is necessary for an online business, but it is exhausting!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My ceramics are made mainly with earthenware clay and stoneware. I often use underglaze, colored slips, and of course regular glazes to decorate the surface of each piece. My pots are made to be fun and functional. I make them with the intent that they will be used in daily life while bringing joy to the person who uses them. My work stands out from other potters because each piece is hand-made and hand-painted to bring a unique feel to each pot. I’m not specifically proud of any one piece, but instead, I’m proud of my dedication to each pot that I make.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love how Greenville seems really large but it’s actually a very intimate city. Compared to some other larger cities, this is such a great little community. I grew up in a small town in rural PA so Greenville seemed overwhelming at first. Then I realized how amazing it really is! The thing that I like least about Greenville is how fast it is growing. It makes me nervous that Greenville might lose its small city charm.
