Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Springs.
Hi Matthew, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
LUNATIX: The Brand apparel is urban streetwear brand dedicated to reaching the passionate spirit of artists, underdogs, and unorthodox dreamers in both look and feel. LUNATIX started with me and my twin brother, Myles on our 21st birthday. With our birthday being two days before Christmas (Capricorns), we usually missed out on the full celebration, especially with friends. So that year, we were determined to do something dope. Something that was authentic and fulfilling, not trendy and for clout. Plus, many of our friends had birthdays around the same time, so we were doing it for our own small community. We started planning, and the deeper we dove, the bigger the idea got. What started as a simple event turned into a full-on party that rewrote the standard. We wanted an event where people weren’t standing by the wall being “too cool” to have a good time, where people weren’t afraid to dance and participate because of how they would be judged. We wanted to structure something that made everyone forget about their insecurities and inhibitions and for once in their lives, just feel completely ALIVE! So, we named the event “LUNATIX”, as a play on words to “Lunatic”; a crazy or eccentric person. Basically, just to say that those that go against the mold are always deemed crazy or insane until they make their vision a reality. When school let back that Spring, our party was the underdog event, but went to war against the status quo and won. Needless to say, the event was a success that not only changed us but the people that supported. It led to even larger events, to a business, and eventually to fashion. All with that say ideology: to Live. Not exist.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entrepreneurship isn’t all smiles and good sales, especially when you are starting off. We had lots of different issues along the way, some we’re still working through. For one, juggling a business with a full-time job and school. I was working full-time as a teacher while my brother was trying to graduate, so we had to make the most of our time and plan ahead. PLANNING! To run a successful business, you need to plan seasons ahead. Most of all, just learning the ins and outs like finding good vendors, finding your audience, building your communication outlets, and more. One of the most important struggles in my opinion would be distinguishing ourselves as a brand, rather than just a clothing business. With all the chitter-chatter from the outside world, it’s easy to be swept up in what others want and fantasized over rather than who you are. A brand stands for something; it has a meaning and identity unwavered by popularity, money, and other distractions. As long as we stand firm on what LUNATIX: The Brand stands for and learn from our mistakes, the rough road will lead to great reward.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
LUNATIX is a medium of expression through events (Lunatix Entertainment) and fashion (LUNATIX: The Brand) for eclipsed dreams and potential within this limelight-blinded society. What people define as “art”, “lit” and “talent” are based on conventional perspectives glorified by spotlights rather than individuality. We change the tide and challenge the norms of the mainstream with the glow of overshadowed genius. I specialize in the fashion; I design, print, sell, and promote LUNATIX: The Brand. Everything we put out is an original work straight from our thoughts, experiences, and inspirations. I am most proud of our message and identity. LUNATIX motto is “Live. Not. eXist.”. You will find it signed on all our clothing and feel it in all our actions. What it means and how it is expressed is all based on our life and journey. As we grow and change so does LUNATIX. It can never truly be duplicated; we are the only true versions of ourselves and that’s what sets us apart from everyone else.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Music, poetry, anime, spirituality, science, and astrology are a few interests that wake up my creativity. Hip-Hop has always been a big influence since I was a kid, from Wu-Tang and Common to Sauce Walka and 21 Savage. Rap is my go-to but I also like a little neo-soul, R&B, Jazz, and more. Music has always been both an outlet and escape for the oppressed and unheard. Movies and TV I also love, specifically anime inspires me; Shonen MCs always find a way to stay true to their dreams. Poetry, scientific theories, mythology, religion – anything that’s raw or digs deeper to explain or discover truth eases my mind and sparks my creativity. Things like that teach me new things, provides me with new feelings, and lets me know I’m not alone when it comes to dreaming of more.
