Daily Inspiration: Meet Julie Lauman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Lauman.

Julie Lauman

Julie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story began in St. Louis, Missouri — the place where my dream first took shape. After years of caring for friends’ and neighbors’ pets, I discovered that my true passion was creating a life surrounded by animals and helping others care for theirs. When I moved to Charleston, South Carolina, I decided to turn that dream into something real — and that’s how Happy Hounds Dog Walking & Pet Sitting by Julie was born.

From the very beginning, my goal has been to bring a personal touch to every client and every pet I care for. I believe that no two pets (or pet parents) are the same — each has their own personality, needs, and routines. That’s what makes my work so special. I take time to understand what each family needs and tailor every visit to fit them perfectly.

What truly sets Happy Hounds apart is the way I stay connected and communicative. Whether it’s a quick walk, a weekend visit, or an extended overnight stay, I keep pet parents fully informed with photos, videos, and detailed report cards after every service. It’s important to me that they not only trust me — but also feel part of every happy, tail-wagging moment while they’re away.

Over time, this personal approach and dedication have helped Happy Hounds grow through word-of-mouth and community support, earning recognitions like “Best of South Carolina” and “CommunityVotes Platinum.” But for me, the true reward is the relationships I’ve built — both two-legged and four-legged — and the joy that comes from knowing I’m making a difference in the lives of Charleston’s pets and their families every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road definitely hasn’t been completely smooth, but every challenge has shaped me and my business for the better. When I first started Happy Hounds after moving from St. Louis to Charleston, I had to rebuild everything from the ground up—new clients, new community, and new routines. It took time, patience, and a lot of long days to establish the trust and reputation I have now.

There were also challenges balancing the physical demands of this work with running the business side—scheduling, communication, and staying organized while caring for multiple pets each day. The Charleston weather can also be unpredictable, and I’ve had to adapt to extreme heat, rain, and even flooding just to make sure every pet still gets the care they deserve.

But I’ve learned to see every obstacle as an opportunity to grow. I’ve built strong systems to keep clients fully informed through photos, videos, and detailed report cards, and I’ve earned a loyal base of families who know I truly care about their pets like my own. Every challenge has only reinforced how passionate I am about what I do.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m the owner of Happy Hounds Dog Walking & Pet Sitting by Julie, proudly serving the Charleston, South Carolina area. My journey began in St. Louis, Missouri, where my dream of caring for animals first took shape. What sets me apart is the personal connection I create with every client and pet — I take the time to truly understand their unique personalities and needs because no two are ever the same.

I specialize in individualized pet care — from daily walks and drop-in visits to overnight stays and even wedding pet concierge services. I keep pet parents fully informed with pictures, videos, and detailed report cards after every visit so they can stay connected even when they’re away.

My own pets inspire everything I do. I have two beloved Chinese Shar-Peis, Teddy and Dahlia, and three amazing cats — one I rescued in St. Louis, Bella and Simon, who is blind and lives life to the fullest, and Meow Meow, my friendly indoor-outdoor kitty who’s loved by the whole neighborhood. They’ve all taught me compassion, patience, and unconditional love — values I carry into every service I provide.

What I’m most proud of is the trust I’ve earned from my clients and the joy I bring to each family I care for. At Happy Hounds, every pet is treated like my own — with love, safety, and genuine attention.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
For me, finding a mentor has always come from real connections and being part of my community here in Charleston. I’ve met some of my biggest supporters through local small-business groups, neighborhood events, and just talking with other entrepreneurs who truly understand the ups and downs of running your own business. My sisters and brothers are always my cheerleaders and close personal friends always are by my side.

What’s worked well is being open, genuine, and showing people my passion for animals and customer care. When others see that you’re dedicated and love what you do, the right mentors and friendships naturally follow. I’ve learned so much from fellow local business owners who’ve guided me, encouraged me, and helped me grow Happy Hounds into what it is today.
