Daily Inspiration: Meet Jessica James

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica James.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started singing at the age of 3. I sang on the children’s choir at my home church in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. By the age of 7 years old; I started writing my own songs and singing at several church events. A few years later my parents moved to Costa Rica where I continued my music career. I began singing at churches and events all over the country. Once I turned 15, my parents wanted me to return to the U.S. to finish school and attend college. I moved back to reside in Greenville, SC where I quickly jumped into the music scene. It started in high school, singing at plays, events, graduations including my own, as well as concerts. I released my debut EP “Champion” in 2019 and had the privilege of opening for Tank and Lyfe Jennings with my hit single “I Wonder”. This same year, I developed a passion for helping others through fitness. I started my fitness journey in 2015 due to health issues and the poor body image I had of myself. Making my health a priority, and working out, helped me overcome my insecurities with my body and allowed me to heal; it also helped me grow mentally, spiritually, and physically. I wanted to give that same feeling to others. So I started DYG Fitness to inspire and uplift others to put their health first, to regain their confidence, and feel great about. My motto for DYG Fitness is “Elevate Your Mind- Transform Your Body! I’m truly passionate about both my careers. Through music, I get to help people heal their hearts and through fitness, I help people heal their mind and bodies!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. In the early part of my music career, I faced people who tried to take advantage of me financially because of my eagerness to learn and invest in myself. I’ve dealt with janky promoters, people trying to sabotage me, and even the personal struggles of having the continuous resources to pour back into my career. When I started my fitness company I was working for corporate America making really good money but I took a leap of faith and left my job to pursue this purpose. Owning your own business has its challenges, clients fluctuate, the cost of materials increase, there are so many factors that can affect your business but it can also be very rewarding. The fact that I get the privilege of helping others for a living is such a blessing I do not take for granted. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices to become the artist and business woman I am today. I’ve had sleepless nights, lost money, personal property and more, but when you know you have purpose; you don’t give up to circumstances. You continue to have faith that your light will bless others and that everything else will fall into place.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a pop singer/songwriter. I am known for being a performer and having great stage presence. I’m proud of the fact that I am using my talents to be a blessing to others. I’m grateful to be living out my purpose. I believe what sets me apart from others is my humility. I love being open to continuously learning my craft. I never feel like I’ve done too much or know to much. I’m always looking to grow, expand and be better at everything I do so I know I’m always giving it my all from a place of genuine love!

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I have definitely learned to adapt in both my careers. I’ve learned to better use the resources around me, I’ve learned to be better at time management as well as money management. The Covid-19 Crisis also reminded me of the importance of unity and not being afraid to as for help or accept help. We can’t succeed alone! We all need someone to help us along the way, and having a supportive tribe can is a major key to overcoming any crisis and to true success!
