Daily Inspiration: Meet Jade Joyner

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Joyner.

Hi Jade, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
2016 was a big year. Three years after meeting and falling in love, newlyweds Jade and Graham Joyner went into business together. Metal + Petal, their full-service interior design firm, marries the best of their talents while offering an all-encompassing list of services that appeal to both residential and commercial clients alike. From conception to installation, and everything in-between, they quickly made a name for themselves thanks to their modern approach to traditional design. Balance is at the heart of Metal + Petal, as they seamlessly pair simplicity and decadence, masculine and feminine, Southern-style with a European flair, and sophistication and soul in every space. Jade Joyner is the co-founder, principal designer, and chief creative officer. She is an energizer, dream-chaser, and arbiter of beautiful designs uniquely adapted to meet her clients’ needs. Graham Joyner is the co-founder and chief executive officer. He is a problem solver, trend-spotter, and early-adopter of practices and technology to enhance and perfect the client experience. Jade had 15 years of design experience and together with Graham, built their business in Athens, Ga and just expanded in 2021 to Charleston. They felt Charleston was calling them. Before they opened their doors this November, they already had a client roaster filling up.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting the business was easier than maintaining and running the business. The level of design that we bring is elevated, sophisticated, and contemporary. It’s a style many love and gravitate towards. And while new designers joining us may have an eye, teaching and training new team members is a challenge because as owners, everything (every decision) is so important to us. It doesn’t feel as important to staff. It took us a while to find the RIGHT team to invest in and grow with. There’s also designing a project and getting a project to completion. And that is the difference between someone who plays decorator and a designer.

Keeping up with the amazing growth we have has left us so grateful and we are truly humbled by how many clients trust us with their interiors. With a lot of fast growth comes growing pains. We’ve had to push ourselves to lead more, trust more, and have faith in ourselves and our abilities. There’s been days when I have literally crawled into bed from decision fatigue.

The last 5 years have not been smooth sailing at all but what we have learned is: if it comes to you organically, naturally, it is the best. Anything we’ve had to push or force never works out well. We’ve also learned that if you let some things play out, instead of making snap decisions, they will usually work themselves out.

We also trust red flags. This was one of our BIGGEST lessons. Whether hiring someone or signing on a client, one red flag leads to another. We now trust our gut more.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a business owner, entrepreneur, creative director, designer, and romantic. I am also a very strong businesswoman who has an incredible partner that balances me well.

I am really good at feeling a space. I know what a room needs. I have a good sense of scale. I know how to create an interior that speaks to YOU, that is livable, that makes you want to stay. My interiors are different because while they are inspired and lovely, they are also attainable. Real spaces for real people.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Real people make me happy. Good intentions. True, honest hard work makes me happy. My family makes me so happy. They are my true support system, my sounding board.

In my soul, I am a very simple person and I enjoy simple pleasures. A good book. a glass of wine, a good chat. A handwritten note means more to me than a gold necklace.

Well-designed spaces make me happy. Beautiful wallpapers, gorgeous fabrics, handmade wares fill me with so much joy.

What truly makes me happy though is seeing my family, my team, and those I love happy, fulfilled, joyful. There is no greater gift than knowing those you love are OK.
