Daily Inspiration: Meet Frances Barry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Frances Barry.

Hi Frances, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was a fashion major at Georgia Southern and I learned how to sew in my sewing lab. I made a bow tie for my dad that following summer for Father’s Day. It was a hit! So, then I made more and started selling them to the fraternity guys on game days.

Everyone used to dress up for all the games then. After graduation, I moved back to my hometown, Mt. Pleasant, and decided to shift from fraternities to the wedding industry. I have been working with brides and grooms for over a decade.

However, Covid has impacted my business so I have expanded my textiles to baby blankets, tea towels, napkins, and now a new jewelry line, Twin Shem, that I am running with my twin sister.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There definitely have been struggles along the way! Stressful slow months to trying to please difficult customers but I wouldn’t trade it for anything else!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I design my fabrics then have them printed then sew all my products. It is fun seeing my vision come to life. I also do custom designs for people including pictures of the pets, so that is always fun to see their reactions when they see the final product. I think the fact that I design and make everything sets me apart from other bow tie makers because I can create whatever the customer is looking for!

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Unfortunately, the wedding industry has taken a hit. I definitely see my bow tie business trending down so I am hopeful that my unique baby blankets, tea towels, and now new jewelry line will be a new creative interest for new customers.
