Daily Inspiration: Meet Emily Walker and Meredith Gilmore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Walker and Meredith Gilmore.

Emily and Meredith, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
We met in college at Appalachian State University and became instant friends! We both have always been on the creative side and we will use any excuse to throw a party. Throughout our time in college as roommates, and then after college, we always were the go-to party decor girls plan birthdays, sorority events, and other celebrations. Our friends and family had told us for years that we “should make it a business” and we both always laughed it off and thought to ourselves, “we wish.” Fast forward to 2021- we both decided that we wanted to take the leap and make a move to a new city. Although we no longer lived together as roommates, it was only fate that we would both move to Charleston, SC. We moved here last summer and began to notice the amount of bachelorette parties around town. We both discussed the idea of starting a business together for what felt like years, only to make the plunge in November of 2021. We both decided it was the perfect time to begin this adventure and we are so happy that we did. This brought us to the launch of bashbox in February of 2022. We have already met so many amazing people and we cannot wait to see where this business will go!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most things, there are definitely some challenges we have faced. Everything is a learning experience in a new business which can be taxing in the beginning. Obvious obstacles like creating an LLC, learning how to create a website, taxes, accounting- everything is new for us. One unexpected challenge was separating who does what in the business. Simple things like knowing who should reply to what email or messages we receive, or if someone had already responded, or posted to our social media, etc. Over the past few months, we have really started to fall into our own roles within the business and that has been amazing for us because now we are able to do our thing without having to wait for the green light from the other. We have always communicated well- living together for 7 years gave us a lot of practice- but we have really learned which strengths each of us have in the business and have developed a lot of trust in each other’s decision. As we continue to grow, I think it is important we remember that challenges are not negative and typically are an opportunity for us to grow, so we are excited to see what other challenges we will face as we continue moving forward!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We want to make every event feel special and make every person feel celebrated! Bashbox gives you all your basic party essentials in one box- balloon arch, streamers, themed plates, cups, napkins, and straws, sign/banner, etc.! We also offer in-home setup to remove the stress of having to setup your own decor while guests are arriving. We want to work with everyone’s budgets, so we love that we can offer multiple add-on options to make our packages customizable for each event. The add-on options really allows guests to customize their party and add a little something extra to the event. Some of our most popular add-ons are Welcome Drink Station, Hangover Recovery Kits, Customized items (koozies, shirts, hats, bags, cups, etc.), In-Home Chefs, Customized Cookies, and more!

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to us is being a part of something bigger and being able to create special moments for people during their celebrations. We are able to connect with new people every day and share these special moments with them. There is nothing better than seeing the videos and pictures of our clients’ faces when they walk into a fully decorated party specifically customized just for them!
