Today we’d like to introduce you to Damon Banks. He shared his story with us below:
Damon grew up on James Island while also working at Kiawah Island Golf Resort during his high school and college years. Damon was hit hard by the travel bug after living in Germany for a year in high school as a Rotary International exchange student.
Becoming fluent in a foreign language and traveling freely across borders while absorbing everything he could from the cultures proved addictive. His ever-growing bucket list of places to see and golf courses to play keeps him busy while always looking for ways to curate localized experiences along the way to becoming fully immersed in the places he travels – from golfing through Ireland to experiencing sailing and saunas in Finland and expanding his culinary passions with the masters of pastry in Italy and France.
After more than 20 years of working with a diverse collection of corporate brands, print, and digital media outlets, public relations firms and agencies, and other international freelance projects, his work as an award-winning journalist for his travel and lifestyle editorial work, a copywriter for global hospitality brands, and brand consultant for marketing and media clients seamlessly merge the worlds of writing, editing, brand identity, social media, marketing, public relations, and promotion.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have certainly been some ups and downs. While doing a lot of travel and lifestyle writingfor magazines and online media outlets, there’s always a delicate balance of being able to do the travel required with working, and in my case, while also managing other freelance client projects.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My work always provides both a national and international perspective, which is combined with a firm grasp of the latest media technologies. Today, this is a balance of continuing to work with select editorial assignments, providing my copywriting services as a contractor and freelancer to hospitality and travel clients, consulting to several publishing and public relations clients. I like to think that clients benefit from my rich background while developing global marketing campaigns, representing international public relations clients, executive producing television and video projects, managing writer teams and publications, and developing editorial features for an impressive collection of worldwide magazines and media outlets.
As a freelance journalist for more than a decade, I have contributed over 100 editorial features to more than 15 print travel, lifestyle, and hospitality magazines; written hundreds of digital features for some of the leading media outlets; provided expert commentary to multiple online news sites; performed hotel reviews for outlets such as Telegraph UK; and developed SEO-rich content for other websites. I am also thankful to be an award-winning journalist for my work with travel, lifestyle, culinary and golf editorials.
As someone who understands all aspects of publishing, I bring a unique set of skills and knowledge when working with magazine clients and other media outlets. I have been fortunate to work with an impressive collection of magazines and media outlets over the years where I have served as a contributor, editor-in-chief, contributing editor, consulting editor, and managing editor.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
As time allows around my travel and other work, I’ve been working on my first novel. Stay tuned.
