Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Stone.
Hi Corey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started this journey back in the 6th grade when I first got into a band class. I always wanted to play percussion and follow up with my brother but when I walked into class that day and saw the saxophone, I knew that that was the instrument for me! Since then I’ve been playing the saxophone, and around 2014 is where I started playing professionally with bands. Now it’s 2022, I’m a part of my own band with amazing musicians, I have an EP out (Musicismyvoice), a radio show (MusicallyStoned Radio Show), and I’ve performed and I am still performing for weddings, proms, parties, festivals, etc.…
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I can’t say that the journey has always been a smooth one. There have been multiple times that I’ve questioned myself and my ability and even wanted to stop because of all the time it takes up but this is definitely something I love doing so there’s no stopping anytime soon.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What I specialize in is mainly performing. I love to get in front of a crowd and give my all so that’s mostly what I’m known for playing sax and basically anything music. I also play the keyboard/piano and a little bit of bass guitar. I’m most proud of the music that I put out this year! I’ve always wanted to create music and be able to put it out on streaming platforms and this year I definitely was able to do that! I think what sets me apart from others is my mentality and the way that I carry myself. Also, all musicians that I have met have had their own style so in that sense, my style is what sets me apart from others as well.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Instrumentalist-wise, when it comes to finding a mentor there’s plenty that you can find online through music. Find an instrumentalist that you like and study them. Listen to them and analyze their patterns and shapes then add that into your own repertoire. Networking is only hard if you make it. You have to get out, show up to events, and talk to the people that you want to network with. If you don’t put yourself out there then no one will. If you don’t go out and show what you can do then how will anyone else know?
