Conversations with SoFunk

Today we’d like to introduce you to SoFunk .

SoFunk

Hi SoFunk, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our band started a little over 2 years ago when Brett Ensley Studios hosted an artist showcase that combined different members of the studio together in order enhance their artist’s performances. Through this event the founding members of SoFunk, Matthew MacPhail (lead singer & rhythm guitarist) and Skyler Hall (drums) met and decided to start a band with a fellow musician named John Benson (lead guitarist).

Over the next year Hannah Bowen (another musician from the studio) joined the band on Keys and John stepped down so Matthew’s old friend, Kevin Osornio joined up to fill the role of lead guitarist. The band began to play a few local gigs and by the end of the year they found their final member, Evan Hamlin, an old friend of Skyler, to fill the role of bassist.

This past year the band played a number of gigs around the upstate and released their first 2 singles “Reassurance” and “Funk Theory”. They are currently working on releasing their third single called “Step Inside” and are planning to release their first album sometime this next year (2025).

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a fairly smooth road primarily because of the positive attitudes of each member. Just like every band, we’ve had to figure out the right way to work together but this band has always done just that. There is no internal conflict, everyone participates in the band’s decisions and above all we choose to do this thing because we love playing with each other.

Our one real hurdle was honestly just finding all the members! After losing John, we were fortunate to find Kevin and Evan. The fact that they are old friends of two members of the band helped them to seamlessly transition into the group and everyone got along and played well together right away!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Our musical subject matter ranges from internal thought processes and struggles to the idea of having fun and dancing to good funky music.

We’re not quite what you would call “traditional funk” but we mix funk with rock and sometimes heavy rock to create a unique blend.

We don’t base our music on any other artists but each member brings their experience and influence from various genres and artists to create our unique sound.
