Conversations with Nancy Perry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Perry.

Nancy Perry

Hi Nancy, I am so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
An art history course in college led me into a life-long love of all things in the art world! I studied painting at local colleges and art workshops and settled on impressionistic landscapes as my favorite genre. After many years of exploring painting, I followed an irresistible urge towards abstraction. I found a wonderful mentor who introduced me to non-objective art, which has captured my interest for the last ten years. Exploration and experimentation are crucial aspects of my mixed-media and college works today. Moving to Charleston has been a huge plus, and finding Redux Contemporary Art Center has been a dream come true. The friendships and motivations from an established studio situation have given me the space and events to pursue my artwork. Having been raised in Atlanta, I am still a “city girl,” Charleston offers the history, culture, and beauty I love. The beach being nearby is an added plus!

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Following an intuitive process has forced me to enjoy the surprises at work and embrace chaos and calm. I often want to cover up the challenges that arise, but now I appreciate that the process shows the progress of the work. I work in series to explore different aspects of my interests by continuing with a theme. Expressing harmony amongst disparate things is a favorite theme in my works. I have collected fragments from many objects such as papers, magazines, cardboard, cloth, old works, etc., and I love to put some of these into my collage and mixed media. My only struggle is finding the time to work and the freedom to follow the path where my art leads me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, you could tell us a bit more about your work.
My artwork combines mixed media and collage on canvas and paper. I aim to find harmony in disparate items, which is what life is about. Following specific themes allows me to explore areas of interest and express my feelings about things and events. Color is the most important element to tell a story about something important to me. Lyrical abstraction best defines my work as the freedom of expression with spontaneous gestures that show an inner reality finding meaning.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Charleston for the many aspects it has to offer, including the culture and beauty of a city and the intimacy of a small town. There are so many historical places to explore and beautiful venues to enjoy.  A joyful atmosphere with friendly people makes Charleston a special place.
